Why buy a Wii U when you can get a Vita for your PS3?

Why get a Vita when a regular Dualshock 3 controller is a whole lot cheaper?
Try playing a Vita game on your Dualshock 3, see how well that goes.

1. Because it's a Vita, and does what Vitas do.

2. Because the Vita has a touchscreen, multi-touch back panel, etc, which the PS3 will be able to stream games to, use for input, and so on. Essentially...most of what Nintendo showed the Wii U doing should technically be possible using a PS3 + Vita (PS3 + PSP can already do a little of it). Some things moreso, since the touch capabilities of the Vita will trump the single-touch resistive touchscreen of the Wii U in most respects.

You wouldn't buy it simply as a surrogate for a DS3.

Remind me how well that went with the GC-GBA connector.

Dunno, I've only done it with a PS3+PSP, and even then only to stream PSX games to the PSP for giggles. I have PS3 native games that support Remote Play (Blazblue, Lair), but I've not tried playing them that way. I do remember it being a "workaround" for the oft-maligned Sixaxis controls in Lair

Offhand, the GC/GBA thing was more akin to what the DC already did with VMUs, only, you were then limited by the GBA's controls compared to the GC. The Vita will have similar enough controls to the PS3 that it should work more seamlessly.

Factor in that the Vita is a more robust device, that they've got an online service connecting them...I don't think it's all that comparable outside of the "will consumers buy both" angle. To that, sure, it's a bit of a stretch to expect. What I wouldn't be surprised to see, however, would be PSN native titles that work on PS3, Vita, or both if you happen to have them.

My feeling is that because there isn't a requirement to have both devices you will see little use by developers, because we've seen this exact thing time and time again. The connectivity between the Gamecube and the GBA is very similar to what the Vita will do with the PS3, and what the WiiU will do. The advantage the WiiU has is that it will come bundled with the system, so developers can count on it being there. With the Vita connectivity you're in one of two spots:

1. Have optional Vita functionality that goes unused by the majority of your playerbase
2. Have required Vita connectivity which means you don't sell outside a niche market

I totally agree. We have great examples right now that show this. PS3 Move and Xbox360 Kinect. How many motion games are on these systems? PS3 3d gaming, no need to get a 3ds right? Every 3DS game will most likely support 3d, can sony say the same even after they release their new TV? How many games right now do you think support 3d on ps3?

Get the WiiU if you want to see the two screens used alot. Use the ps3 and vita combo only if you already have a ps3 and would like a few games to utilize the connectivity features. Me, I will probably get both but I love all gaming consoles.

A fair number - pretty common for upcoming Sony published games it seems. Sony's infrastructure at least allows for games to be updated for it, if they developer chooses.

One thing I'd say about that though, is that on the PS3 (as an example), a game that really works with motion controls or 3D can have it. It might be more of a stretch for the consumer to have the required hardware, but if a developer feels like it'd add to the title they can put it in.
The 3DS is pretty much going to have 3D every time, whether the game benefits or not. The Wii has motion controls shoehorned in where they don't belong. Not on everything, but enough to make it annoying.

I'm sure the Vita will have some gimmicky touch controls and things in games, but I like that Sony doesn't seem to be banking on any one feature. It's a robust device across the board. If there's a really good use of PS3/Vita interaction, I'm sure it'll happen. If not, then it won't need to be forced to justify anything.

Well, Sony just announced that the Vita will be coming out this year in Japan, but the rest of the world doesn't get to have it until 2012. Crud.

Ask for a 3ds instead; more titles will be out by Christmas time.
