Well, I'm gonna try to go on a diet again for like the 500th time. But I've been thinking that I'd like to try to include some really good exercise-based, dance/fitness video games into my routine.
Starting with "Power Pad" games on the NES like Track & Field and working our way up to Dance Dance Revolution and eventually ending with the more recent dancing and exercise games on the Wii, PS3 Move & Xbox 360 Kinect like "Just Dance," "Dance Central," "Wii Fit" and "EA Sports Active."
What do you all think are some of the best exercise-based video games ever made and/or available today?

Yourself! Fitness is a good fitness program on PS2/Xbox and later renamed to something else on the Wii.

If you are still looking for good fitness games and have a Japanese Wii, you should buy Shape Boxing 2 and Billy's Boot Camp. Both are very good fitness games.

Also, of what I have played on Kinect, Dance Central is probably the most fun game that still provides decent aerobic exercise. I enjoyed myself, and broke a sweat.
Awhile back I also wrote this post that details some of the history of "exergaming" that might be of interest to you:

Re: Best Dance/Fitness Games?
Dance Dance Revolution is a great series in general. My favorite one is DDR Ultramix 3 for original Xbox. It's tough to recommend a single game in the series, they all have some good and bad elements; it's safe to say that if you like DDR and you're serious about playing, it's worth getting several versions.
In the Groove is an excellent DDR-clone for PS2 that has a rabid following among hardcore DDR players.
I used to play DDR on a daily basis and it was definitely awesome exercise. I didn't lose a lot of weight, but I became physically able to do a lot more. Plus it's tons of fun and I love the music.

Re: Best Dance/Fitness Games?
At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I think that the best dance game so far is Pump it Up. So go hit the arcade and play there.
That said, DDR is still great and since DDR X the notecharts, bread and butter of the genre, have been getting better and may catch up with PIU soon. Again, I would hit the arcade but you have good options out there. DDR 3rd mix JP is great and represents that era of the game very well. You can also download Stepmania, a simulator that pretty much makes other home versions obsolete, it's that good.
I don't recommend In the Groove for a beginner because as great as the notecharts are, the music is crap.
