Very true, and on that note you might want to buy a CR2032 battery or two since the one in your system is likely dead. Here's a good thread discussing them in more depth:

With some of my Saturns when inserting a 4MB Ram Cart it takes a few goes before working properly , ive heard cleaning the Pins on the Saturn will return it to normal so if a Cart doesnt work first go it doesnt mean its broken.
Also Sanyo Laser's are easy to detect externally , around the Laser eye there will be 2 gold coils around it. If there isnt it means its a 32-Pin or 64-Pin model Saturn.

That is very helpful to know. I will have to keep that in mind when I see systems at the flea market.
Any tips on changing out the existing battery with game saves on the system? I have a few DragonForce saves that I wanna keep, but I don't want to risk the battery going dead, or losing the saves during the replacment process. Should I do the replacement with the system on?

Usually that is due to the battery being dead or nearly so and the memory getting corrupted. Some models have a button to press to help clear and reset the memory, but generally taking out the toasty one and leaving it unplugged a while, then adding a fresh battery clears it up.

Anyways, the biggest noob mistake when it comes to Saturn games is buying all the overpriced crap on eBay. If you're going to buy a game off ebay, watch all the listings for a month or so waiting for a decent price. A little patience can save you some serious cash, or get you an excellent copy for the same price as all those beat up ones.

I think it does. I like the round buttons better than those oval ones. Poor me, I have the first model.
I love that glossy strip that goes over the front, and the lights. It's not really the button shape that I like more. However, I do like the Sega logo on the front of the model 2. The model 1 does look a bit plain without it.
