Which Version Is Best?

Post by WrathOskvro »

Not sure if there is a topic like this one, but yeah.. discuss and ask which version of what game is the best, and tell each other why, etc.

What brought this idea on? Well, I have a question, but alot of people ask this one so I figured why not make it for everyone.

So my question is..Which versions of Lunar 1 and 2 are best and why? I want to play them but I'm not sure which would be more satisfying. Sega CD or Saturn?

Same question, but about Mega Man Legends. Which version of it is the best? PS1, N64, or PC?

here's a quick run down for both version:

Audio:
PS1 version has better music and no missing misc. audio from N64 version.

Graphics:
Capcom takes advantage of the N64's extra graphical beef by adding Anti-Aliasing to the graphics. This makes everything smooth, so the visuals are no longer pixellated and everything looks far less jagged. The game looks about 30% more realistic than the PS1 version.

Controls:
You can use the Control Stick or Pad in Mega Man 64. The PS1 version is limited to the pad only.

Misc:
You can use the Rumble Pak to feel Mega Man's pain on the 64 version. The PS1 version does not support rumble.

The N64 version has 16 save files. The PS1 version has 5.

NO LOAD TIMES on the N64 version. 8)

I haven't played Lunar 2 in ages so I can't really recall much of it at all, but I've the same story from several friends:

Lunar 1 = PSX version
Lunar 2 = Sega CD version

The Sega CD version of 2 apparently has a more customizable skill level up thing in it that the PSX version lacks, or something like that.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in general I've just heard a few friends say that's the versions of the Lunar games they prefer.

Ummm, you DO realize the Saturn versions of Lunar are only available in Japanese, don't you? :? Unless you are proficient in Japanese, I suspect you would get more satisfaction out of the Sega CD versions. Also, there are two different versions of Silver Star on the Saturn; one utilizes the MPEG add-on card for higher quality and full screen video, while the other has lesser video quality, but doesn't require the MPEG card. I believe there was only one release of Eternal Blue, but I could be wrong.

There are quite a few websites around showing the differences, but here are a few:

-Most of the music is different.

-The Saturn version has much, much better anime scenes. Of course, that comes with the newer technology.

-The story has a number of changes in Silver Star; some of them are substantial. I won't say them here so I don't ruin the story, but they change the entire feel of the game overall. I prefer the Sega CD version for the same reasons as above.

-The magic system in Eternal Blue is different. I prefer the Saturn version here.

-The battles are random encounters in the Sega CD games, but are Chrono Trigger style on the Saturn.

-The dungeons are quite a bit better in the Sega CD versions.

Overall, I prefer the Sega CD versions. This is mostly due to nostalgia, as I had a Sega CD and these games back in the mid-90s, and also because of personal preferences. The Saturn versions are EXTREMELY well done and you really won't go wrong with them. Best of all, the Saturn versions can be had cheaply; just a few dollars plus shipping from Japan!

You might also want to consider the Playstation versions, which were released in English. They are basically the same as the Saturn versions, although the graphics and sound on the Saturn versions are noticeably better. The PS1 versions of Eternal Blue has some extra things to do at the end of the game, which is nice.

All I can say is that I own both sets for the Sega CD and PS1. I HATE the random encounter system on Sega CD because they ABUSE it to no end. Seriously, that is the Japanese gamer design. Take two step, get attacked. Kill the enemy earn minimal EXP. Wait for the load. Rinse and repeat. Plus fleeing is not an option to try, it gets harder to run each time. Plus you are way punished for not maxing your EXP about a quarter of the way through. Which means more fights....

As far as Lunar 1 goes, the PSP remake is pretty nice of what I played of it. I haven't played any other version...but if that option is open...but the PS1 versions of Lunar are kinda pricey so it might be cheaper to get the Sega CD versions but that is up to you.

I prefer tomb raider on the saturn than on the playstation.

In Resident Evil 2, the audio is so much better and the cutscenes more smoother on the Playstation than in the N64
