A little advice on spending $60

Post by MrEco »

So here's the deal. I've got $60 and 4 thing's I'm thinking of spending it on. I don't want simple answer just telling me to buy one of the things and not the others. Please try to convince me.

First, Catherine. Everything looks great about this game except I'm a little worried about the difficulty. I've never played a game like it before so it's impossible for me to compare and know If it'll be frustrating or fun. I tried the demo which was a nicely balanced challenge, but the demo was only reflective of the first level and I assume the game gets harder as it goes on.

Second, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The problem with this one is simply that I didn't like Oblivion. However, I loved Fallout and according to Bethesda a lot of the design decisions in Skyrim are inspired by Fallout and from what I've seen from previews of the game a lot of the problems have in fact been alleviated. But I'm still uneasy.

Third, Final Fantasy XIII-2. Well, not much to say. Although it wasn't perfect I really liked FFXIII so a sequel would almost definitely be worthwhile. Also, with the addition of towns and the fact that its near impossible for a game to have a more confusing story than XIII I think it's likely that XIII-2 will be even better.

Lastly, there's also the possibility of getting not just a single game but some (As of yet undecided) combination of cheaper games and/or anime DVD's.

So, discuss. :)

Catherine is way too good to not pick up. Its a lot of fun, the story is great/addicting and the game really isn't that hard. Takes a few repetitions sometimes but in the end it is very doable.

Catherine first caught my attention back when there were no plans for a domestic release. Next thing I know I hear it's been released, lol, lucky me I was spared the torment.

I haven't had much time to invest in playing the game yet but from what I've seen thus far it definitely looks like it's worthwhile.

Another vote for Catherine. Difficulty may ramp up, but as seen in the demo, the easy mode allows you to rewind your moves. And if you wanna start on normal, it's a game you get better at the more you play it, so you'll improve as you go.

From what I've played in the demo, it's a pretty fun puzzle game, and I really love the voice acting and character designs, just like I did with the Persona series.

I love my Japanese weirdness, so Catherine is a good choice, but I'm going to toss in a vote for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I'm not a huge Elder Scrolls fan, but the procedurally controlled dragons, tribal giants freely roaming the plains, and other artificially intelligent creatures that inhabit Skyrim just make it look like that game world is a living, breathing entity. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you decide, but I'm finding myself falling in for the Skyrim hype.

Skyrim or FFXII-2. Both will last way longer. I've never been into the whole anime/whatever Catherine is thing. Doesn't look interesting to me. Just my opinion.

FFX III 2? That's not even out

My vote is for Catherine. It is a bit difficult though, but the game does try and teach you the ropes

Yes, and neither is Skyrim. There's this little thing called a pre-order though...

Oh, right, that never even crossed my mind. The whole concept of pre-ordering is strange to me. Putting down money for something with no guarantee that it will be great or not

I purchase games new based on a simple principle: I ask myself "Will I ever see another game like this released in my territory again?" The smaller the probability that I work out, the more likely it is that I will buy the game (obviously, I would also have to be interested in the game as well, but that goes without saying). There will always be more Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasies, and retro games will never leave us. Also, buying retro games means that the developer isn't getting supported anymore by sales of that game, sadly. Catherine, however, is something completely new, fresh, and original. You've never seen anything like it, and we are unlikely to ever see anything like it again. That, along with it being a very enjoyable experience from what I played in the demo, is why I bought it.

The point is that buying Catherine is going to ensure that developers take chances more often with riskier and more innovative titles. Right now, the industry is stuck in a cycle of monotonous, cookie-cutter, safe and conservative games that keep games stuck firmly in a rut. By buying Catherine, you are not only getting an excellent game, but you are becoming part of one of the most promising efforts in recent memory to shake the industry up and make some waves. It won't save the industry, but it will encourage game developers to try something that is actually new. THAT is the biggest reason why you should buy Catherine.
