Got an Apple II?

Post by Hatta »

Then you need one of these. Finally a floppy disk emulator for Apple II! We've been stuck dumping disks over serial with ADTPro, which is excellent software. But this new hardware will eliminate the need for magnetic media entirely. Really exciting stuff.

It's on sale today. Supports DOS3.3, Prodos, GS/OS partitions in dsk or 2mg format, as well as emulating a hard disk. Reads CF cards and USB sticks/card readers. It even emulates two disks for extra convenience.

Really, the device does almost anything you want. Unfortunately, it doesn't emulate the disk all the way down to the physical layer (like the 1541U does for C64), so copy protected images don't work. But copy protected games that haven't been cracked are few and far between, so I don't care about that.

These are going fast. I think he had about 200 of them, and he's down to 165 just since yesterday. As word gets out that these finally hit the market (it's been a while!), it's going to be a popular item.

I used to have an Apple 2 GS, with both types of floppy drives. Then my dad threw it out one day when he was cleaning, because it had been put in storage and he thought we didn't need it anymore. :x

Aw, that's heartbreaking. The IIgs is the finest computer Apple ever produced. But I doubt I need to tell you that.

It's the classic 8-bit PC. 1mhz 6502 CPU, 64k ram, built from off the shelf chips. You can play Lode Runner on it, or you do your taxes in VisiCalc. It lacks custom chips like the C64 has, so the graphics aren't as great, but it was ubiquitous and nearly everything from that time had a version on the Apple II.

This thread is about a new piece of hardware for the Apple II, that emulates the floppy disk with flash media. So you can just download disk images to a CF card and play them from there. Very much like the PowerPak for the NES, if you've heard of that.

That is epic. I'm glad I'm old enough to appreciate something like this, though I haven't touched an apple II in probably 15+ years.

My Apple ][c still works just fine but who knows how long the floppies will.
That's not a bad price but it's just a little steep for me for nostalgia. :(
