That's great for single player, but it doesn't help playing LAN or over the internet with friends without going through battle.net.

People have just reverse engineered the game files and directly modified them (some are plain text, others are DLL changes). So that option will be just as available as it is now; namely you can't get on battle.net with them. And the internet connection part will be modded out as part of it; mark my words.
Even "always on" internet connections occasionally drop out for one reason or another (the PC or router can glitch, your provider company can have a problem, etc.). It is a layer of bullshit that you have to worry about all the time, might force you to save more frequently, and so on...

Or you could just be like the legion of Starcraft 2 fans and just... not worry about it.

This. Blizzard aint what she used to be. I was already on the fence about purchasing D3, but now they've just made it harder and harder to forgive them. They're turning Diablo into WoW's half MMO retarded brother. Selling items for real money... Seriously who thought that was a good idea?

Have you not been in a chat channel in D2 in the past 10 years?

Nope never liked playing D2 online. Did Blizzard endorse the purchase of items with real currency long ago?

Endorse? No, but it happens all the same. Now they're saying "Ok, we know it happens, so let's at least make it safer for the people involved." Seems like a reasonable position to me.
