I think the special stages are way easier to find in S&K, as CFFJR said earlier there were times where I could get all of them close to the end of Mushroom Hill Zone or into the next zone.

But I owned S&K for years and never really owned Sonic 3, that probably goes without saying. I know S&K like the back of my hand, but even if I've played Sonic 3 dozens of times it still feels a bit more alienated to me since I don't know it as well, lol.

I could probably agree the S&K special stages are tougher though. But still not nearly as frustrating as those dumb special stages in Sonic 2 to me, ugh!
You'd think Sonic 2's would be easier since there are no instant fail sphere's - but those damn bombs are sneaky!

I believe the first time I ever got all the emeralds in 2 was with Knuckles, only because he doesn't have tails following him everywhere.
There's a reason I always made it a Sonic only game in the options.

Yeah, I don't think I ever once pulled it off with Tails.

I think everything is the same in S3 in S3&K except for Launch Base. Launch Base is a lot easier in S3&K (no spike enemy things on the spinny things, item placement different) because Launch Base is no longer the end of the game. SEGA pretty much made it easier to advance to the S&K part of S3&K.

Been a while since I've been into it, though. I feel like I'm forgetting something.

hehe. same here. I also owned S&K for years, and Sonic 3 is the only Sonic Mega Drive game I got as an adult, so it feels strange to me to be playing that game XD.

But please allow me to say, that S&K special stages are easier than Sonic 3's. Way less blue spheres to collect for one thing.

You're probably right, though I meant I don't think I've ever collected all Emeralds with Tails tagging along, since you have to take in consideration his delayed jumping and other things like that in the special stages. So you've gotta worry about Sonic AND him, talk about frustrating!

Damnit Tails! Get out of my way! I'm trying to reach the chaos emerald. If you keep running into those bombs, I'll never get the chaos emeralds.
Tails still pisses me off to this day. Knuckles is my man though.

As for every other Sonic character, I just close my eyes and tell myself they never existed.
