Huh. I didn't know that. Looks like unmodded Genesis controllers are no good for 2 button games and they do all sorts of screwy things.

The workaround for 7800 Asteroids is built into the game. If it detects a 1 button controller then you pull downward on the joystick to use your hyperwarp. With a 2 button controller, you hyperspace with one of the buttons.

And to Icedawg, yes you can mod a Master System controller to work with both buttons. I'm sure if you search Atari Age you can find some guides for that.

I don't trust myself with modding or touching anything lol I'm tempted to just bite the bullet and buy an expensive Joypad.. how do they feel in the hands compared to a master system controller?

THANKS! A great way to play 7800 Asteroids with a 2600 Wico Bat Handle.

I bought Desert Falcon off Amazon for $5.99 figuring that and Centipede should keep me busy for awhile. Over the next few weeks I'll pick up the Donkey Kong and Pac Mans, probably Galaga too. Any other games worth mentioning? What sort of price should I try to pay for Mario Bros and Scrapyard dog?

Heh. I'm pretty much the same with mods and repairs. I try sometimes, but my success rate is no better than 50 percent.

The European 7800 gamepads are very similar the Master System pads. About the same size, similar button layout. The plastic of the 7800 pad seems a lot harder than the Master System pad. It's hard to describe. I like the 7800 directional pad a little better than the Master System's which I always thought was kind of mushy. They both seem kind of small after years of playing with SNES, Genesis and Playstation controllers.

Here's an ugly but helpful list of 7800 games that use the 2nd button.

http://www.atari7800.org/7800list.htm

Games with a 2 in the righthand column require a 2 button controller and games marked 1* are playable with a 1 button controller, but you lose some functionality. Check out the list and see if there's anything you just have to play right now that uses the 2nd button. Imo, other than Asteroids, the 2 button games are nothing to write your mother about. If you're not absolutely dying to have it and you want to save some money, give it a go with your Master System controllers while you keep an eye out for some reasonably priced Atari pads.

Asteroids (great and still quite playable with a 1 button controller with the above workaround) and Food Fight.

You should be able to get Mario Bros. for around $5 if you look hard enough. I've never played Scrapyard Dog, but it looks like that is $15 to $20. I'd go for one of the great homebrews first if you can find one to buy.

Enjoy. It's a great game. 2 player is even more fun.

that;s crazy how the system recognizes if a atari brand controller is in or not. sounds like i have no choice but to pick one up. Okay thanks for the feedback, Desert Falcon shipped today can't wait to play that 1. Awesome
