what is the deal with ps3 updates?

To get back on topic. You can opt out of updates by hitting Circle when it prompts you to update. You have to do this every time but its never games that force you to update. Only system updates are forced, and even then not all of them are.

Of course if you want to use online features you must be up to date.

you cant cheat updates!

its not like they have a new update that is 720MB
then they get another update which is 1.02 GB

u dont just download the last one
u have to download the 720mb first, then the 1.02GB which is INSANELY stupid and unacceptable

you can imagine how many updates you will accumulate by the end of the year...
as I said, I got modnation which is 1 year old game and it had like 9 updates
if I buy a game from 2008(ex. MGS4) will I get 27 consecutive updates?

and whats funny is that, this is not even downloadable content or expansions
its just probably fixing bugs or something, because I never really saw a difference in the game after updating

In the case of Modnation it is DLC actually. Thing is, if you haven't bought the DLC you can't use it. But you still need the files for it so that if you run into someone online who is using the DLC karts or costume pieces you can actually see them. There are other DLC heavy games that have lots of updates (little big planet), but for the most part games will have 1 or 2 at most.

And again, if you don't plan on playing online anytime soon, just hit circle to skip the update and head straight into the single player.

modnation refuses to go online for some reason

I can go to the psn store
but the game won't connect for something like 2 months now
now online gameplay for me, no DLC for me
