Gochamaze No Arashi is a bright and colorful cute 'em up. It scrolls horizontally. There's not too much to set it apart from other shmups in terms of gameplay. You have a spread shot when tapping the fire button, a powerful shot when holding it down, and a bomb that clears the screen of bullets. Pretty standard and it actually feels a little slow moving. I will say though that there are some cool bullet patterns on the bosses that wind around in unexpected ways. Graphically though, it's very fun to look at. There's lots of color and weird characters. I'm not sure why cute schoolgirls with squeeky voices are always in these horrible battles with each other, but they are. Maybe they fight over whether they should wear frilly princess dresses or BDSM gear. I'm not sure. But many bullets will be shot over whatever it is they fight about and much cuteness will be destroyed in a blaze of pink and blue gunfire.
Narcissu is another visual novel game that starts in a hospital like Katawa Shojou, however this game becomes more of a road trip story when the two main characters go on a journey for themselves.
Here's a pretty unique doujin game. Neo Geo fans will recognize from the screenshot above that this game is highly reminiscent of the classic, yet underappreciated Windjammers. Crazy Power Disc: Perfect is a sequel to Crazy Power Disc that has added new characters and abilities. If you're a Windjammers fan, give it a go. Even if you're not, there really haven't been many attempts to copy Windjammers (for reasons I don't understand), so this gameplay should seem like new to you.
Note: The download is a .BIN/.CUE disc image. Mount it with a program like MagicISO and then run the SFX. When it finishes, decompress the 1.02 patch in the game folder.
Chantelise is being brought to the US by Carpe Fulgur, who also brought Recettear to the English speaking world. There is a free demo out now on their website and the full game will be released on Steam and other digital distribution services on July 29th.

This is a game that I read about online in a discussion about challenging topics in video games related to sex and sexuality. I haven't had a chance to play it yet (still downloading), but it sounds interesting. You are a 19 year old boy who drinks some strange concoction and wakes up a woman and now has to deal with the new found attention this has garnered him. It's an eroge and definitely an 18+ title with some controversy surrounding it, but I thought others might be interested in the unique gender bender subject matter.

bullet hell. it's really, really, really, really fucking hard. love it, though. that's about as much of a review as i can offer. i really like the style. soundtrack's great, too.
another great shmup. this one is a little easier than most doujin shooters i've played (as they typically tend to go for the more extreme "bullet-hell" style than the classic arcade style), but still a good challenge and it has a lot of character.
