Do you play games for hours on end day after day?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Do you play games for hours on end day after day?

A man whose son died after playing video games for long periods is campaigning for greater awareness of the risk posed by their excessive use.

Chris Staniforth, 20, who would play his console for up to 12 hours, died in May from deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

His father David believes the condition may have been triggered by long gaming sessions.

No, I don't game for hours on end day after day. I used to back when I was 13 or 14, but it got old after a while.

My prayers go out to the family of this young man. Truly sad. :(

Have there been any separate incidents of DVT deaths as a result of excessive gaming?

::EDITED::

That last bit was inappropriate, folks :( Sorry about that. I tend to get "passionate" with topics in regards to obesity, the diabetes epidemic and the like...

Being fat wouldn't help, but you don't have to be fat to get DVT. He most certainly got it from never moving at all.

This guy was completely sedentary (save for his thumbs of course) for hours on end every day. He played 12 hours of games, and probably spent most of the rest of his time sleeping. Its no surprise unfortunately.

I just hope people realize when it comes to this story and others like it that its a death caused by addiction.

This. I'm sure people have died from typing or writing novels 12 hours a day endlessly.

Still sad though for the family involved. Just not another thing that needs to be pinned solely on videogames.

I'm surprised we don't hear about this sort of thing happening more often with office worker slaves and grad students more often. It seems like those groups are notorious for excessive hours of sitting behind computers without getting up for a break. Perhaps it happens but doesn't make the new because it doesn't allow one to say "see, video games are bad!"

It definitely has value to be a balanced person and have other interests... I could never play video games for a WHOLE day without going completely nuts; that can get boring and actually a bit depressing after awhile.

I find having other hobbies and exterior goals can sustain my interest in video games as a whole... an excess of anything is never good.

I don't play for extended periods of time like I did back in jr. high and high school, even then it was only on weekends and during summer and as soon as the temps dropped in the late afternoon I was outside riding dirt jumps or skateboarding, so I wasn't completely sedentary. I don't know how anyone can game for 12 hours straight, though. After a couple hours I start to get antsy and have to get up to burn off some energy. Though a freak accident, this story should be an eye opener to anyone with an overly sedentary lifestyle

This is definitely very sad, thoughts and prayers to his family.

I could bee wrong, but most office workers and grad students still get up and move to get coffee. Last night, before I went to sleep, I had spent the past 40 hours awake, sitting down typing for 32 of those hours (roughly 5pm thursday to 1am saturday), only getting up to get to a coffee shop (the exercise helps stay awake), which I did three times, or to get to the department and back home. So yeah, I see your point.

I can do it, especially with friends, but I wouldn't be able to play that much in the days following.
