It seems as if I'm the only person who didn't like VC

Post by BoringSupreez »

I bought the game (Valkyria Chronicles) because everyone seemed to think it was awesome. I played it, only to discover it was crap. The story and characters were completely ridiculous. Come on, who puts a teenage girl in charge of the defense of a city? Plus, everyone was far too calm, dreamy and ready to flirt considering invading armies were on the way. I've seen far too many WWII documentaries to find the way people behaved in the game believable. Now, I know some of you will probably say I'm trying to take the game too seriously. But if isn't supposed to be that serious, then Sega failed at making the game zany enough. If it's supposed to be serious, then they failed at keeping enough of the anime silliness out of it.

Now, for the gameplay issues. I find the idea of turn based combat were one has to aim the gun manually, like a shooter, but then has only indirect control over the shooting to be infuriating. The game needs to make up its mind on what it wants to be. I constantly found myself wishing I could just take over the shooting completely and do it all in real-time, like an FPS. Also, I found the ability to move during the combat annoying. I prefer the type of combat where everyone stays inside a square while they fight, like in Chrono Trigger or Earthbound. And BTW, I didn't like the graphical style (far too bright and cheerful for a war game) and the music wasn't anything special.

So why am I just about the only one who took issue with this stuff?

You're not. I though it was pretty silly too, and as far as SRPGs go it's nothing special at all.

Vice City had a teenage girl in charge of city protection?

No wonder you can steal cars and run people over all day long.

Viewtiful Charles?
Vagrant Conte?

Valkyria Chronicles. Sorry, I couldn't fit the full name in the title, and forgot to put it in my post. I'll edit it in.

ha, I actually saw VC and thought of the Virtual Console.

Anyway, seems like all your gripes with the game were over gameplay issues that were fairly obvious from reviews and gameplay videos. Maybe not so much the half serious/half silly anime storyline, but that's sort of a requirement for jrpgs

and yeah, I'm in the camp that absolutely adores this game.

Thought of Virtual Console myself, lol.

Anyways I saw a friend play a chunk of the game and I actually thought it looked really cool. Might pick it up sometime considering it's really cheap now. Who knows what I'll think I guess.

I didn't research the game much before I got it. It was an impulse buy, because Gamestop was doing a buy 2 get 1 free sale, and I needed a third game. I had only heard in passing it was supposed to be good, so I picked it up.

If anime is any indication, the most reliable way to protect a city is to put a teenage girl in charge of defense.
