Got some PS3 Questions.

I'm flirting with the idea of finally getting a PS3 but I have some questions.

1- Is the PS3 playable on a standard definition television (using composite cables)?

I'm still in the middle ages using a crt for everything. HD sets have gotten cheaper but I'd like to save money where I can. Also, for the record, I'm not a graphics whore and I've been playing my 360 on my crt for years without complaints.

Also, I've read some comments stating that text is unreadable on a standard crt. Is this true?

2- Is 160 GB enough memory for my uses?

To be specific about products, I'm looking at this system. I don't download any games so that isn't really an issue as far as memory usage goes. I guess I'd be using memory for installing games (or can you do that?) and is 160 GB enough for a decent sized library of games?

Yes, you can play on an SDTV, although like the 360, it sort of defeats a lot of the purpose. Yes, there are games with unreadable text on SDTVs, although most seem to have been patched at one point or another.

Definitely -- if you find that it isn't, the PS3 takes standard 2.5" SATA laptop drives, so you can upgrade on the cheap if it's ever necessary. They're available in 250, 320, 500, 640, 750, 880 and 1TB depending on the manufacturer.

You will use up a chunk of your drive with some games (that have mandatory installs) or others that install a small portion to the drive. The rest is up to you with what you download from PSN.

You'll be fine with 720p. Pretty much all PS3 games run at this resolution. Games that run at 1080p are usually just up-scaled and the somewhat minor improvement isn't anything to get excited about anyway.

It all depends on what you want to do with the TV, where it's going to go, and the appropriate size.

For example, if you were going to put it in your basement where there's a lot of room, and you were also going to watch movies on it .. you might be in the market for a nice big screen. Around 46" and up is where 1080p content really shines. Anything smaller than that, there's very little logical point, but maybe the TV you're getting is 1080p capable and falls in your price range -- no worries. :p

To really get the most out of your HD console, get a 720p screen or better. Once you see the crispness and clarity of text, etc, you'll be sold! When it comes to the PS3 specifically, there is more 720p content than 1080p. Whereas on the 360, there is more 1080 content. I'd say at this point it matters more for HD movie watching than for games. As long as you have at least 720p, you'll be able to enjoy everything.

I have a 160GB PS3 running on an SDTV with S-video cables, and it works just fine. I can read all the text. Don't go any lower than S-video though, or the text becomes too blurry. And 160GB is plenty of space. I've had my PS3 for about a year, and I still have over 100GB left. That's after buying 10 games, downloading their patches, and then getting the two free downloadable games after PSN crashed.

When you get an HDTV definitely get at the very least some component cables.

But yeah I've got a 120GB myself and I'm sure it'll be fine for years, so 160 should definitely be fine for you.

Not positive, but like the PS1 and PS2 I'm sure the PS3 can also support SVideo for your SDTV. The Chroma and Luma signals separated will look better then Composite.
