How do I open this type of Genesis cart? It has no screws!

Post by rocketcat »

So I got a copy of Stormlord for Genesis. Which works great loading the copyright screen, but never goes beyond that.

I've cleaned the pins several times and it still doesn't work. So I thought I'd open it up to get a better view of the pins and see if anything else is wrong.

Thing is...I can't figure out how to open it! It has no screws. D:

I noticed this thin slot on each side and carefully tried using a small pocket knife to see if it'd catch on some sort of latch, but I'm afraid to force anything and cause damage so I didn't get far on that.

I did notice the game isn't flush on the bottom anymore though, so I did something I just don't know what. :/

So what's the trick here? :D

Just realized I have that game. I noticed that notches on the edges. I'd imagine if anything that may be the way to get it off but I feel like i'm going to mess it up.

Might be a matter of pressure on each side to remove the top.

Felt the whole label up, no soft spots or indents. Looks to be smooth and flat. :/

Yeah I did try sliding a small pocket knife into each side, but I really can't get it to move much. I'm afraid of applying pressure in the wrong place and breaking something. I think there is a trick it, I just can't figure it out yet.

Been a long time since I've held a Stormlord cart in my hand. I agree with Mechblue the screws might be under the label. MD-J carts have them under the back label. Atari 2600 carts had them under the label too.

I'm not sure if Stormlord is one of the carts that doesn't work on a Genesis with TMSS. Does your Genesis put up the "Produced by or under license from Sega"? Accolade was one of the companies that fought over licensing with Sega.

That's the only screen that occasionally comes up when I put this cart in, and I have to by hold it back a little with my hand sometimes to get it that far. Which is why I think it's an internal problem cause I've cleaned the pins several times now, but if I could get the cart open I might have a better angle at them to really scrub them off. It's the only cart I can't get to work. :(

My Bubsy cart works just fine, and it's Accolade. The Stormlord cart says Razorsoft.

My Genesis is the 2nd model btw.

Ok, I'm confusing something in the history of that game. I know there was something funky about its release. Since you have a model 2 Gen, that means it has the TMSS. Do you have access to an older 'HD graphics' Genesis to try it on?

Sadly no I don't. :[

EDIT: If any one with both models and Stormlord want to confirm this for me that'd sure be swell, that way I can know it won't work for sure and can take it back to get another game before the return period is up. I have awhile on that though. :)

I have most of the variants of the genesis and I just got this CIB stormlord a few days ago so I could test it out on them all even the nomad.

I'll try it later today.

Also I'll confirm like rocket cat said there are no screws under the label, the dots on the back of the cart don't match up with the label area, except for the top one.

Thanks, I appreciate it. What an odd game this is turning out to be! XD
