A game collector on an episode of Hoarders

But whether you've watched it or not, when do you think a collector crosses the line into becoming a hoarder?

I'm not sure someone organized enough to be building a proper collection of any one thing would fall into the real definition of a hoarder. Maybe someone who compulsively acquired any game they could with absolutely no discretion - duplicates, games nobody wants, etc. Done to a self-destructive degree, that'd be similar to bibliomania, which is a subtype of hoarding.

Otherwise...no...putting yourself in massive debt for sake of collecting in most cases would simply be irresponsible. Hoarders don't tend to latch onto things that actually have value, so they probably wouldn't spend like the guy in the episode did.

I often wonder where the line is drawn between collector and hoarder. I haven't watched this episode yet, though I'm looking forward to doing so later.

I had the same problem. The above link takes me to a video of Ron/Carol, not Randy/Vicky. I looked through the list of full episodes and didn't see any of Randy. There is a 1 minute clip of Randy in the Clips section but it's not playable.

Googling around, I found comments from other users that A&E must have moved the video. It seems that it was active a week ago but not today. So I don't know if anyone in this forum was watching the correct video.

they could do an episode on women hoarding many shoes to purses, most things women collect. I'm not trying to offend any one just that people have either hobbies, collections, hoarding issues. I had to share a closet and its not the best... or I would have more space. I stop collecting nes games only because I already got some good ones and it takes up space. I probably have tiniest gaming room compared to anyone out there in racketboy community. I just want a bigger home to feel more spacious and not messy. I have already given away some of board games and toys to goodwill. Sometimes people collect autographs, I just added that last random bit. at the moment I'm cleaning my room to organize it.

Video game collecting becomes hoarding when you focus on the material face value of the product and not the desire to play the game. IMO

Plus, hoarders often have tons of duplicates. Collectors don't generally do that. I mean, what would be the point of owning 10 copies of Pac-Man World 2? A hoarder would see lots of good reasons for it, but not a collector.

Yes. Sadly, the only option left is to burn them. With fire. We're...uh... going to need quite a bit of accelerant.

For those with an interest in clinical psychology, Hoarding has long been considered a subtype or manifestation of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In the upcoming DSM-V, it may become it's own separate diagnosis.

One important part of the diagnosis that they are considering is “Persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value.” This means that you're only a hoarder if you collect sports games.
