I decided to pre-order Wii Fit despite not having any initial interest in it or not wanting it as an exercise tool.
I think the board has some real potential as a legitimate game device more inline with adding new ways to play convential game genres beyond its initial exercise application.
I had an interest in VR in the late 90's, right now VR is kind of dead but I was thinking about the balance board being used as a limited VR device for virtual character movement.
For example, RPG's. In RPG's you cover a lot of 'virtual miles'. I think it would be a potential cool application for the balance board if you actually had to do the character movement yourself. It would add to the overall sense of immersion in a neat way.
Of course you would have the option of going back to conventional directional controls.
RPG adventure and a work out at the same time, lol...
Not sure what the board's full potential for creating character movement would be in a virtual space. Any ideas?
Wii Fit a 'VR' device for virtual character movement?
I want one for a human input device to interface with Max/MSP. There's a guy that creates music from a 'Wii-suit' with loads of Wii remotes attached to various extremities. I've used the Wii-motes to create a virtual Theramin using Max/MSP.
Not sure if you can do what you're saying with the balance board. All it really does is sense pressure from a persons centre of gravity. Don't think you can really 'walk' in a convincing manor on it. It might be possible but I think the device is a little limited for that.
However this might be similar to what you imagine. Believe it or not I designed something similar to this when I was 13 for a science project at school, I was well into VR when I was younger and thought it was the best thing ever hehe! Just wish I could build one myself. I just don't have the room to do it. I have the technical knowledge on how to hack one together it's just finding the materials and space to do it. Could you imagine playing UT or Quake on that thing? Awesome.

I suggest you send your resume to Nintendo! Thats a great concept!devilmyarse wrote:I want one for a human input device to interface with Max/MSP. Cool. An rpg designed around Wii Fit by Square sounds too good to be true.Square Enix Keen On Wii Fit Controller
There are no actual plans to take Final Fantasy into the fitness genre, but that whole system and mechanism of using your weight and balance to control games is something we're interested in incorporating into future RPG titles.
Sweet. That would be awesome in an arcade. I guess size might be a major drawback for the home experience. However this might be similar to what you imagine. Any idea whether Wii Fit can pressure detect (obviously not motion) a jump? Yeah, the Square comments give me hope. I'm not sure how the board would detect directional change in a natural walking style. Maybe a shift in pressure towards a direction could translate to a certain degree of character turn. I dunno? Not sure if you can do what you're saying with the balance board. All it really does is sense pressure from a persons centre of gravity. Yeah, basically the only way I can see how to use it for movement is to detect when you're leaning forward. Therefore having your body replace an analogue stick. It would be very easy to register a jump as the sensor value will go from 254~ to 0 or 127 to 0 depending on how accurate the device is. You just use >= or <= statements to detect it.
I'd love to see games to use the Wii fit peripheral! I thought that Samba De Amigo would use it but apparently it's just gonna use Wii-motes which is a shame.
I don't agree with the Kotaku article stating that it would be good for skating. It would probably suck really badly unless done REALLY well. I think a better solution would be to have a special wii-mote holding sock that you put on each foot, then you can balance and steer with the balance board and then when you jump it can monitor the velocity and direction in which you flick your feet. That would be the best skate sim ever made!

Have you seen the Wii Family Ski videos using the balance board? What about leaning to the side to approximate directional change when controlling a character's walking motion? I don't know how close the board could be used for at least 8 way character movement.Yeah, basically the only way I can see how to use it for movement is to detect when you're leaning forward. That would've been great but one can keep their hopes up for a balance board version of Space Channel 5.I'd love to see games to use the Wii fit peripheral! I thought that Samba De Amigo would use it but apparently it's just gonna use Wii-motes which is a shame.
