Hunger and Famine in Somalia :(

Post by AznKhmerBoi »

World's biggest refugee camp extended as Somalis flood in....

Thousands of Somalis fleeing drought, famine and war have started moving into a new extension of the world's largest refugee camp in Kenya, which is increasingly concerned about bearing the brunt of the Horn of Africa crisis.

About 1,500 Somali refugees are now crossing into Kenya each day but there is no room for them in the congested Dadaab camp, which was declared full in 2008.

Instead, 65,000 refugees have been forced to "self-settle" in cardboard and plastic shelters on flood-prone land outside the camp.

The Kenyan government opened Dadaab camp, designed for 90,000 refugees, in 1991 as a temporary solution to the civil war across the border. But 20 years on, it hosts 440,000 refugees with no end in sight to the conflict.

The U.N. World Food Program said it cannot access 2.2 million hungry people in rebel-controlled territory in southern Somalia.

African politics are easy to understand: They do not exist.

They do, it's just that every group of 100 people or more seem to have their own politics. Often politics that collide with the other 15,000 political groups in the area. So no one gets anywhere.

Do you think its due their earlier governance culture of tribes?

I met this girl in college who was from some country in africa. She told me for the summer she had gone back to her country and celebrated with her family and the King. I was like " WOW the king ! you guys must be aristocrats or soemthing"
but she said o no every village had a King with their own unique rituals and guidelines.

Then i told her my country had a king. Commoners rarely see him or come close to him, because he always in the palace or hosting foreign dignitaries.

Yes, very much. For some reason, Africans have a really hard time forgetting the old tribal distinctions and moving on up into modern styles of governments and borders. The time of tribes has passed, yet they continue to hold on to that lifestyle to their own detriment. It would help if they had democratic traditions, but they don't.

Don't you think that's a bit ethnocentric?
