Re: Online Gaming in 1983 - Sega SC3000H
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there tech available for an 80's Atari system that could stream/download games via modem, in addition to the SC3000?
Re: Online Gaming in 1983 - Sega SC3000H
I am not sure to be honest, Atari is not my strong point. The SC3000 was not designed with the 'streaming online' in mind when they implemented the audio in, many consoles (C64, etc) from that era used Tape as a medium.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there tech available for an 80's Atari system that could stream/download games via modem, in addition to the SC3000?

You're thinking of the CVC Gameline.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there tech available for an 80's Atari system that could stream/download games via modem, in addition to the SC3000?

My Mom and I got a long sales pitch from some guy at a K-Mart when this thing first came out. No sale because the games mostly stunk. Also, I loved my cartridges and games, so the idea of erasing a game once you got tired of it to make room for another didn't appeal to me.
Fun fact: Gameline failed and from the ashes of CVC arose AOL.

Cool idea. Too bad you couldn't play any decent games.

That's what I was thinking of.. Thanks! Interesting that the tech was there, (pre-Al Gore internets!) But I agree - even today I love my physical medium, and I hate when I have to make room on my meager 20GB HDD for new XBLA games..Golgo 14 wrote:You're thinking of the CVC Gameline.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there tech available for an 80's Atari system that could stream/download games via modem, in addition to the SC3000?

The site doesn't really have any decent games, I got hold of some tape dumps from different sources online of some decent looking goings, but every time, no matter what program I used to convert it, no matter what audio out settings I used, the console would register the name of the game, but I would always get tape errors.BRIK wrote:Cool idea. That sucks. I actually think that plane flying/building bombing game looks quite fun though. You just need to figure out why it crashes at the end lol.emwearz wrote:The site doesn't really have any decent games, I got hold of some tape dumps from different sources online of some decent looking goings, but every time, no matter what program I used to convert it, no matter what audio out settings I used, the console would register the name of the game, but I would always get tape errors.BRIK wrote:Cool idea.
