Some strange news out of Sony's latest financial earnings release: sales of the PlayStation 3 are down, while sales of the PlayStation 2 are steady and the PSP is making a late-life comeback!
The release covers the three months between April and June this year. In that time, the PS3 sold 1.8 million units (down from 2.4 million last year), the PSP sold 1.8 million (up from 1.2 million) and the old warhorse, the PS2, sold 1.4 million, only slightly down from the 1.6 million this time last year.
What to make of all that? With the PlayStation Vita on the way, the PSP is almost on clearance, making it a great time to grab one for new customers (it's also still going strong in its native Japan). The PS2, despite being over a decade old, is still a handy purchase with a ton of great games! And the PS3, well. That's a strange one. Don't be surprised if a price cut is announced at GamesCom in August, or the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Re: Has the PSP retired yet?
Been awhile since I've seen a "is the PSP dead?" discussion.
Re: Has the PSP retired yet?
If Vita future sales resemble the 3DS's I wonder if some devs will release PSN games as compatable with both the PSP and Vita to reach a wider market.

I had thought of that too. Like how there's PSN games that work on PS3 and PSP. It would be smart.Croooow! wrote:If Vita future sales resemble the 3DS's I wonder if some devs will release PSN games as compatable with both the PSP and Vita to reach a wider market.
Re: Has the PSP retired yet?
I will say this again and again, Sony did something that SEGA couldn't - produce a handheld to go against Nintendo's and succeed lasting 5 years +, with sales in Japan going higher than DS.
But true, there are not much excitement for the release titles for this year, as we know Sony wants to sell the PS Vita, but you gotta hand it to Altus and XSEED for not abandoning the PSP to continue to release good games on it.
Let's fact it, there were plenty of factors that Sony failed to anticipate for the PSP, but this handheld is a great one, which I think Racketboy should have 101 guide for it in the next few years.

Still plenty of PSP games to be found. In fact I think the PSP is my "most purchased for" system the past year or so. Now if only Nintendo would axe the production of the 3DS and get back to making good DS games again... ::sigh::

Re: Has the PSP retired yet?
People have been saying the PSP is dead ever since it was released, but it has always kept chugging along. I really like the system; not quite as much as my DS, but it's pretty close. This generation has been excellent for fans of portable gaming such as myself, because actual competition has forced a faster rate of innovation into the market.
Also, what's with all this 3DS hate? I think it's an alright handheld; it's not great, but it has some good games for it.

for me it's just that I've yet to see a single 3DS game that I'd want that I couldn't just get on another console. I do think the new DOA looks good, but not quite killer-app for me.lisalover1 wrote:Also, what's with all this 3DS hate? Glad to see that I'm not the only one noticing it. Just wait till the 1st party titles come out; it'll be a successlisalover1 wrote:Also, what's with all this 3DS hate? I think it's an alright handheld; it's not great, but it has some good games for it.

Re: Has the PSP retired yet?
As for me I hate the PSP. The d-pad sucks, the analog sucks, the shoulder buttons sucks, loading in portable sucks, UMD movies sucks. Even when I hacked it, the emulators sucks. It does have some decent game but most of it are just port of older games which I rather play in a big screen television.noiseredux wrote:for me it's just that I've yet to see a single 3DS game that I'd want that I couldn't just get on another console.
