Super Nintendo displays green horizontal bars?

Post by itsmattxp »

I recently picked up a super nintendo from a flea market that was in very good condition with no yellowing. He didn't have any cables so I wasn't able to test it but now that I have cables I tried it out with a Star Fox cart and all I get are green and blue horizontal bars. I've cleaned the Star Fox cart and the Super Nintendo game cartridge but I still get the same green horizontal bars. Am I not cleaning the cartridge slot enough or is there something I'm missing?

Worst case I guess you could get a cheap SNES that's discolored or not perfect and swap guts?

(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

The first thing I would suggest would be cleaning the cart and the internal contacts, but it sounds like you've already done that. You'll want to be very thorough with that if you haven't. Otherwise, what type of TV are you playing on? Modern TVs are known to at times have trouble with the types of signals that older consoles put out. If you're using a composite connection on an LCD for example, this is possibly the problem.

I have a plasma TV and am using composite. I just tried it on my old sony CRT and it works... to an extent. On the plasma I only see green and dark blue bars however on the CRT I can see the Star Fox start up screen but it still has the green and dark blue bars moving up and down the screen. Sometimes by fidgeting with the cable, the connection is completely lost but when readjusted, it works again. I'm using a 3rd party ac adapter from Retro Bit and a nintendo a/v cable that I know works since I use it for my gamecube as well. Any more help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like the 3rd party adapter could be the problem. Try ditching it.

Yeah, if moving the adapter around screws with the picture there's probably something wrong with it. Do you have another one you can try?

What I mean't by adapter was the av cord. For clarity, I'm using a 3rd party ac adapter from retro bit and nintendo a/v cords that I know work.

Edit: I'm also submerging the cartridge holder in 90-91% alcohol right now and am going to see if I can clean it anymore.

Even after the alcohol cleaning treatment, I get green horizontal bars. I can no longer get the star fox image either. Anyone else have any ideas?

I still think it might be a power related issue. The SNES usually runs with a 9 amp charge, it sounds like you're not getting the right amount of power to the system. A lot of the time you can see this sort of problem with universal adapters as they can send the wrong amount of power. Does your adapter have the option to change the power output? You might give that a shot. Sometimes changing the settings around can fix the problem, though the lines can still come back later.

Pardon? The SNES power brick puts out 850mA, which is .85 Amps.
