S-Video, Composite, Component to VGA

Post by irixith »

So, I'm looking for one of these boxes that does S-Video/Composite/Component to VGA. It will be plugged into a 17" 4:3 1280x1024 LCD monitor that only has VGA input.

It should have..

- At least one input of each. More is a "nice" to have, not "must" have.

- High quality video output. (I know, we're dealing with analog video, but obviously I don't want a shitty, blurry picture with incorrect colours going from S-Video to VGA, right?)

- Audio inputs are immaterial, I don't need a passthrough. They'll be plugged directly into a receiver.

- While the plan is to use a 4:3 LCD, I may sometimes switch to a 16:9 or even 16:10 LCD. Compatibility with different options is a plus, but 4:3 is the main purpose.

I've seen a lot of different recommendations, but most are fairly old and recommend equipment that doesn't seem to be able to be purchased any more.

So, what can anyone recommend, in 2011, that's available for purchase, that suits? Let's give a price range of $50 - $300.

1080P YPbPr 5RCA Component to VGA Video Audio Converter.

Forget composite and s-vid, just go w/ component for everything. Anything lower, it's not gonna look right, this is not CSI where we can extrapolate video data that is not there. I was recommend this as an inexpensive way to use my projector (only has VGA) with a PS3.

People go ape-shit for XRGB-3...but I've only seen ppl use SCART (it supports comp/s-vid, though). It is $300 though.

RCA aka "yellow" and s-vid should remain connected to your SD CRT.

I appreciate the reply, but it simply must have s-video for the consoles I have that only output s-video, and I don't want (and won't acquire) a CRT TV.

My only option is a 4:3 LCD, and it only has VGA -- so I want the best possible solution that will work with it. :)

XRGB can take composite and s-vid (SCART, D4) and outputs 480p. If your LCD is not native to that and has crappy upscaling, you gonna have lag. You still do not get component, but you can run everything s-video to keep things easy.

Can I ask what consoles you are thinking of running? If you have room for all of them, surely you can get a 13-20" CRT to fit in you room. Or is this for some project? This can be a slippery slope...

Sorry to bump this, but I was looking for something similar and I found a well rated Composite/S-Video to VGA converter:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2

It's about $30. I've ordered from monoprice before, they're very reliable and definitely legit. That's the best price I've found on an S-Video to VGA converter and I can't find anything that's got both Component and Composite/S-Video. You may have to have multiple converters, but you can feed the output of the YPbPr converter previously mentioned into the VGA in of this converter and you can just switch on the boxes instead of unplugging. Hope this helps.

Weird, I have a similar device I picked up from a buddy cleaning house. Never acually used it, but if irixith is looking for something like that, I'd sell it. But I think they wanted Component.

I'll test it and take some pics if there is interest.

I cannot imagine the image quality would be good for $30 but you gotta do what you gotta do.

From the reviews it seems to be pretty high quality. I mean high quality is relative when you're talking about S-video, but I've had no quality issues with Monoprice and I'm ordering one of these myself to use with my monitor at school (I have a TV tuner in my computer, so no need to have a TV, just need an adapter for non-HDMI consoles). irixith, if you're in doubt about the quality I can report back after I get mine.

Might I suggest this?:

Last one on ebay. I personally own one, and love the heck out of it. I originally used it in college, as I didn't have room in my dorm forboth a TV and a Desktop monitor, so I'm pretty certain this will meet your needs.

SPEC PAGE: http://www.hk.viewsonic.com/en/products ... 6specs.php

I can make a usage video of mine if you'd like.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
