No, the Japanese version of the Master System, (the Sega Mark III) had a unique "FM" chip for sound. Phantasy Star took advantage of this for better audio (I don't know any specific details about all of this, I'm just telling you the the basic idea. ).

Master Systems from other regions didn't have this chip. No chip, no improved audio.

The game supported FM audio, which was only available in the Japanese Master System, or through an adapter for the Mark III. As for how to works for the game, take a listen for yourself:

Oh wow, that's quite a difference. I take it that can be easily emulated though?

I don't know if its easy exactly, but it has certainly been done. :D

The difference really is stunning though isn't it?

It's available on some Virtual Console games, so I imagine it can't be all that tricky. I know Wonder Boy in Monster Land on VC has the option available for one. You press the '-' button on the wii remote to access the FM options iirc.

Finally got around to popping in some Chrono Cross and...... turned out I was super sleepy and now have my game saved at slightly less than 15 minutes in. Somehow I'm already confused. I either had a dream or there are two seperate stories going on. I'll hopefully find a little more time to play later this week.

There was an updated version of the game only released in Japan for PS2 also. I haven't played it but it looks amazing.

yeah, the Sega Ages re-release. It honestly does look incredible. Too bad it didn't have an English option.

I think I might hop on the bandwaggon here:

Donkey Kong Land 2
Wario Land (Super Mario Land 3)
Gunstar Heroes
Duke Nukem Advance
Magic Knight Rayearth
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Keio Flying Squadron
Silhouette Mirage
Sonic Jam
Darius Gaiden

Along with catching up on my anime, and reading books: Thats right ladies and gentlemans. Books.

I think it's possible we'll see a fan translation a few years down the road. I believe there's one in the works already. It's not an English one, but it will open the doors for one if it's completed. The Phantasy Star II remake looks amazing as well. It's a damn shame that the remake of IV got canned.
