Video game storage questions.

I want to put all of my system including a NES, SNES, Dreamcast, and X'Eye. On some kind of storage unit in my room. I plan on buying a monitor and some kind of RCA to via converter. Can you guys give me some advise as what I can buy to put the systems on? Thanks.

I'll echo that; go to an Ikea and look at what they have in terms of shelving without backs. TV stands usually have shelves for appliances, or you could get some open shelving units which will work just as well.

Having recenly expaneded on my collection I too needed more units.

Being on a budget I looked in loads of second hand furniture shops, charity shops, local listings even ebay but found nothing suitable.
If I had found something that was acceptable I would have refurbished it much like racketboy done in this thread...

I decided I would try to make my own bespoke, made to measure units.
I bought a sheet of 2440 X 1220 X 18mm MDF, multi desity fibreboard, from a large local hardware store.
This particular store will cut the board a maximum of 15 times for "FREE". I love that word.
They used a top of the range wall mounted circular saw to cut it so the edges and corners were perfect, not possible with a hand saw on MDF.
Board cut to size and in my car I headed home.
Once in my garage I marked the locations for the screws precisely.
I then drilled the pilot holes for the screws and a 3mm larger hole so the screws would be counter sunk.
Screwed it all together and ended up with....




Perfect fit
As my other units were a bit wonky I added 2 clamps to firm them up.

Couple of things to consider..
Each cut of the board you will loose the thickness of the cutting blade on the remaining bit of wood. You won't get 5 20mm cuts from a 100mm piece of board.
Measure twice, drill once

Total cost..
MDF: £17
Screws: £2 for a box of 100, 32 screws used.

More DIYness..

Following on from making the units for my consoles I decided to knock up some shelving for my games and accessories.

Got a little creative and added a recessed plinth and back board.





The dividers are not fixed so they can be moved to make each section larger or smaller. They also add extra support so the shelves don't sag.
Still got abit of shuffling aroud to get it how I want it .
Probably need to make some more for my Atari 2600 games and other accessories.
My Dreamcast games are stored inside 3 drawer units to keep the sun off them.

Total cost £24.

My problem is what if I want to use Game Genie will I have enough room. I can't for the life of me get a setup that will allow Sega Genesis, plus 32x, plus Game Genie, plus game. What if I wanted to play Sonic 3 and Knuckles with the Game Genie? What would I do?

Honestly, your solution there is to have a high ceiling above your Genny. Either have a storage shelf that has a lot of air above the console, or put it on top of the shelving unit, rather than inside.

Echoing the advice of putting the genesis on the top row, unless you get some kind of fancy sectional cabinet you are going to be wasting a lot of vertical space accommodating the genesis megazord.

I would replace the bookshelf with more of the dvd shelves but I am running out of wallspace and those things aren't designed to be freestanding.


This is what I use for everything else, the bottom shelf holds my ups, which is the size of a small desktop computer, and all of the power adapters.

I was going to build my own shelf. Suddenly it occurred to me though, I'm quite lazy.
I'm buying some shelving from Ikea instead
