I don't expect to have to rely on emulation for most classic systems in MY lifetime. At some point, though, it will be the most viable option for the vast majority of retro-gamers.
It is not that long term, really. The ones with optical drives have less reliability and there was a distinct move towards "disposable" cheaper consumer electronics as time went on - it seems pretty likely that these old machines lasting for over 20 years is not a continuing trend.
Also, emulation is already is the most viable option for the vast majority of retro-gamers. It is only a minority of the minority that is 100% purist. Even many of the ones saying it is just a different feel emulate to some extent (otherwise, how do they know it is a different feel if they did not emulate?). "Not the same" is still "better than nothing"
Ivo's correct in regards to the quality of present day hardware and company interest in disposable electronic goods. The quality of our current gen console hardware, while powerful, lacks the longevity that previous hardware possess. This is one of the reasons why I always <3 cartridges > discs, lol.
As for emulation, like I said in my previous post, there are a lot of pros with few (if any) cons. I've been using emulators an' roms for over a decade an' if you know what you're doing you can get the full classic experience that you normally would get from playing the actual game on the console; the only difference being the controller and monitor you're using.
ROMs have proven to be particularly useful in that I don't have to increase the amount of wear an' tear on my hardware.

While you made a few actually valid points, I call bullshit on this one. If you have found a problem between BSNES and actual hardware, you should report it. I have run the two side-by-side, as I'm sure Byuu has done enough of the past few years to thoroughly hate the system. If you're noticing a difference, it's in your head, unless you have found a valid bug in the software.

I'm sure if I hooked up my PC video out to the TV with an SNES controller it would be the same, but I was simply making the point that even with emulators that emulates a system with near-perfect accuracy (which bsnes is the exception, not the rule) the actual hardware still wins out even then, because it's the real thing. I love bsnes, by the way... I've shown my support to Byuu quite a bit over the years.
In other words, I was saying even if you can avoid all the problems of emulation in general the actual hardware is still superior, though that is just my opinion.

Yep. I always use the original hardware, and if it's too expensive, I just don't play it. Emulating is no fun.

I think you would be more accurate in saying that you prefer the actual hardware. There are cases where it is hard to argue emulating is not outright superior, even if it is more genuine or whatever. I'm thinking in particular about filtering to improve graphics, but certainly I'm one of the non-purists that heartily believe optional save states are strictly better than not having them at all (you are not forced to use them - personally I use them in varied ways and when I'm doing scoring runs will play without them, other times I even use them just to save a few seconds skipping the boot sequence of the game).
