what is the deal with ps3 updates?

Post by RCBH928 »

if this has been duscussed please show me the thread

but I am amazed as how many updates the ps3 gets
it seems like we never switch it on with no update being available
and they are huge

we switched on wwe all stars and there was a 520mb update!
worse yet , we dont really see any difference

the other day i bought modnation and i got like 9 different consecutive updates
the smallest of them was like 180mb

what is going on here?
why is the 360 not getting so many updates while playing the same games?

this is a huge negative for the ps3

I play my PS3 pretty rarely so I can't comment on that. But it seems like almost every time I put in a 360 game that I haven't played in awhile there's a new update, they do seem to download much faster than PS3 updates though.

That is one thing I really hate about this generation of gaming. I don't play either my 360 or ps3 very often, maybe a new game every 2 months or so. So whenever I do get a new game to play, I come home expecting to be able to pop it in and play just like the good ol' days :). I'm a little annoyed when I find out I have to wait 20 minutes to download some OS update, then another 5 minutes installing it, plus reboots after download and installing. Then I finally get to the game and what do you know, another 10 minutes to download game updates, then another 5 minutes installing it. By the time the process is done I almost have no time left to play the damn thing :(

The 360 doesn't seem to download as regularly and when it does the updates seem to be only a few meg in size rather than the several hundred that I seem faced with almost every time I play the ps3.

I love my ps3 but this does bug me, especially considering that you need to be up to date with gt5 to access all of the features because it won't login to psn otherwise, which then disables things like the online garage. Irritating but not a deal breaker.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Xbox 360 can only recall so many updates before it starts overwriting the existing ones. It is a pretty bad flaw.

PS3 on the other hand, has to redownload the whole firmwire and install it from scratch. Think of it as updating a program vs installing it from scratch.

What's even more infuriating is when an update is not really needed (no features added). I know they are just trying to fight piracy, but I still think consumers should be given the choice on whether they want to update or not, if at all possible.

Anyways, I gave up on PSN and current releases some months ago for various reasons. I'm just sick of the whole thing right now.

And I WOULD still buy from PSN if they would only provide an alternative, but they just don't want business from the likes of me. :?

It's a pain in butt, I hate it. The bad thing is that my PS3 seems to screw around if I don't update it for a while. For example I didn't do any updates for a few months and my trophies disappeared :? They of course came back when I finally did update though, but the update took forever and didn't even really achieve anything.

i am not annoyed but find this completly unacceptable
its a real deal breaker for me
there is no reason to buy a new game then wait 3 hrs of downloading just to play it
not to mention cap limit

yesterday's all stars update equals the size of a pretty good gamecube game
yet I still see nothing changed within the game

if the 360 has the rrod
the ps3 has the updates
I wonder if I buy a ps3 how long will I stay updating
if just 1 game took 3 hrs
