Transfering iOS game saves?

I've been trying to figure out if iOS games will keep their save if you delete them from your phone. Google keeps turning up contradicting answers or ways to transfer them from phone to phone via jailbreak, which is something I'm not interested in doing. I just want to know if I can keep my progress if I delete a game app to reload later.

Does anybody know if iTunes backs up your saves from your phone to your computer? I have the 16gb model and I wanted to free up some space by deleting some games I rarely play, but I don't want to loose my progress. I already had an accident where I synced over my game and lost my progress, but I hadn't backed anything up at that point so I wasn't able to test this.

I don't know the answer. I suggest trying to verify this yourself using a junky game. That is, find a game already on your ipod/iphone. Play with it and save it. Sync to your PC, delete it and then put it back.
