The board looks OK to me.

Removing the battery would involve desoldering.

Nah you can get the battery out and change it without any soldering. A small flat head electronics screw driver and some care will get the job done. I show the process in this past video of mine actually. http://retrowaretv.com/video-game-knowl ... placement/

Reexamining the startup screen you linked, it looks like it's just not connecting right (has dots above the Nintendo letters where there shouldn't be), so the battery is probably not to blame.

But you've tried positioning it every which way, so I think it's just dead. Sucks, but happens sometimes. I have a Genesis game that died for no good reason; and doesn't even look worn. You can bet I tried everything to get it to work again though.

So to resurrect a two year old topic, was the consensus here that the cart was dead? I just bought a Game Boy Color lot, and two of the games have issues. One of them, Pokemon Trading Card Game, seems to have the same issue as the OP, with the garbled Nintendo on the boot screen.

The other game, Mega Man Xtreme 2, seems to boot fine, but then just shows a solid green screen. The music plays as though the game were working, and when I press start, I hear the confirmation chime. The screen also flashes white periodically, presumably when the screen would be changing from intro to title screen, etc.

I've cleaned the contacts multiple times with rubbing alcohol, and I've seated the carts in different positions, but haven't had any luck. I don't have a game bit, so I can't open them up, but Mega Man looks OK through the clear case. Pokemon has a black case, so I have no idea what it looks like inside. Does anyone have ideas of what else to try, or should I just consider them dead?
