PS1 Hidden Gem - DBZ: Dead Ball Zone

Post by Weekend_Warrior »

So I found this game in mint condition about a week ago for 50 cents. I thought "what the heck - I'll give it a try." And hey.. waddaya know, it's actually pretty good and fun to play.

The best I can describe this game is it's kinda like the Mutant League sports series on the Sega Genesis mixed with NHL Rock The Rink on the PS1, except the whole object is to either beat or kill your opponents while picking up and throwing the ball into their goal.

Here's the kicker though. You can either set the game to "weapons" or "no weapons." With weapons, you can get things like guns, grenades and chainsaws. With no weapons, it's just punching, kicking and lunging at your opponents.

The controls are pretty good. They're just about on par with EA's sports games. And since it was made in 1998 you'll also be glad to know that analog control is also supported.

The graphics are excellent for a PS1 title, imho. Of course, it still suffers from pixilated characters like every other game on the system. But the gameplay is very fast and smooth. Hell, there's even a Widescreen Mode for 16x9 tv's! That one took me by total surprise.

All in all, I think it's a worthwhile fantasy sports game to track down. So if you see at your local pawn or secondhand shop for dirt cheap don't hesitate to at least pick it up and try it.

...and if you're like me, then I'm sure you want to see a gameplay video. So here ya go:

Best 50 cents I've ever spent. 8)

Woah, that actually looks pretty badass.

Truth be told though, I clicked here because I thought you were talking about a Dragonball Z game. Nice find anyway, something I might check out.

It reminds me a lot of Speedball 2100.

I think because the game is just "Dead Ball Zone", not "DBZ: Dead Ball Zone".

I think next time you should do a little research before saying something like that.

I understand if you confuse this title with Dragon Ball Z (more notably: Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone) but it's not my fault - it's the full title of this game, even if it's only written as simply "Dead Ball Zone" on the cd spine, it is also commonly referred to as "DBZ: Dead Ball Zone"

No need to get upset about it. DBZ = Dragon Ball Z, surely I'm not the only one here who thought this was some Dragon Ball Z game by just glancing at the thread title (and "Dead Ball Zone" sounds like it'd certainly fit for a Dragon Ball Z game title).

IGN officially lists it as "Dead Ball Zone", despite what the cover says. A quick Google search shows many sites listing it without DBZ as well. I'm not really familiar with the game, and I really couldn't care less what its official title is. I was just telling you why he said it was confusing.
