Wait until you get to the permanently killable hostage robots, which means you can permanently lose access to the upgrades they are attached to. There's also forced perspective changes in several levels that are extremely off-putting, the game's "big" ability for Axl is relatively worthless outside of specific set points, and unless you save a specific number of robots, you'll never even get the chance to play as the title hero.

And then there are the boss designs, which range from pretty cool to absolute crap.

Little update:

I've been playing Mario Galaxy 2 again, and after a couple days at it I'm now sitting at 156 stars, putting me just under a third of the way through the Green Star Challenge.

The green stars are quite fun to get, as they are scattered about the levels in oddball places, and you don't get any hints to their whereabouts. You just have to listen for their jingling and look for the telltale glow.

They've had some really creative and cool hiding spots, and I've come across a couple that require you to damage yourself in order to reach them (at least, that I've found. there are probably other ways to reach some of these stars).

I have 86 stars to go for 100%. Almost there! I have lots of other stuff to catch up on this weekend, but I just might be able to finish the game anyway at my current pace. I'm going to stick with this to the finish, then probably get back to Rayman.

My then 2 year old son had a blast helping me find the Green Stars on that game. Whenever we heard the jingle sound he got super excited and we'd run around the area like mad trying to find it. As you get further in they get even more creative with placements. There were a couple the I found really hard to get until to try to get them in a not so obvious manner.

Yeah, it took me many runs to get past the narrow part where the boss shoots balls at you and you have to judge the distance between the boss and the projectile just perfectly. Considering the rather large hitbox on the aleste, I found this to be really frustrating (though fair). I found level 4 to actually be the toughest of the game, as 5, 6, and parts of 7 were fairly easy to manage. I also found that switching to 3 way for the option, using the bomb/fire weapon, and using "free" formation strategically during certain boss fights was what I needed to do to punch my ticket.

I had never really played a lot of Compile shmups before, but between this one and Gunhed, I certainly see why they have such a well deserved reputation. I really need to fire up those copies of Zanac X Zanac and Robo Aleste before the year is out!

I can cross another off my list. That leaves just 4 more to play!

-Chrono Trigger (SNES) - DONE!
-Super Metroid (SNES)
-No One Lives Forever (PC) - PLAYING
-Diablo (PC)
-Guardian Heroes (SATURN) - DONE!
-Adventure (2600) - DONE!
-A Boy and his Blob (NES)
--MUSHA (GENESIS) - DONE!
-Zillion (SMS) - Gave up! Really boring, frustrating, and poor controls.
-Gunhed (PCE) - DONE!

Don't forget the Spriggan games. They're awesome, definitely some of the best PCE shmups.

Congrats on finishing MUSHA, I haven't fired it up since my last go, but I'll finish it sooner or later.

I actually picked up Spriggan Mark 2 earlier this year but haven't given it a play. Didn't remember that it was a Compile title. I'll add it to the pile ;)

Doesnt getting your ticket punched mean getting beat? It sounds like your saying you optimized your weapons in order to fail. Made me chuckle.

Great job on MUSHA though. I still havnt had the pleasure of tyring it out. Its very high on my want to find list for Genesis games.

Galaxy 2 complete!

If you don't know, this is the image (alongside a short staff letter) the game sends to the wii message board once you grab the final, 242nd star.

According to my file, I died 297 times. About 50 of those were caused by intentionally repeating the same level for the sake of harvesting star bits (you need 9,999 to unlock the final stage), but still, that's a lot.

Total playtime: 24:48:18. Damn. Long time, but it feels good. :D

Super Metroid (Super Nes) - Complete
Rayman (PS)
Harvest Moon (Super Nes)
Resident Evil Code Veronica (Dreamcast)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - Complete!
Lightening Force (Genesis) - Complete
Paper Mario (N64)
Fur Fighters (PS2)
Phantasy Star (SMS)
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (PCE CD) - Complete
