I stumbled across this program the other day and downloaded the demo and it seems like it's incredibly easy and versitile ( www.RPGMakerWeb.com ). In about an hour I ran through the tutorial and had a small overworld, a castle with a king, a port town with an Inn/Weapon shop, a new party member, a sea captain who gave me his boat, and a two level dungeon filled with monsters, treasure chests, and a boss. It's essentially point and click RPG making.
Before I sink $60 into the program though I wanted to know if anybody else had used it and what their experience was.
Anybody made a game using RPG Maker VX?

I never used it myself, but I do know the program has much of a cult following as MUGEN.

I've used a little bit of RPG Maker XP. Very little. It was just enough to make me realize I could do something with it, but I would need more time.onemanfilmcrew wrote:I stumbled across this program the other day and downloaded the demo and it seems like it's incredibly easy and versitile ( http://www.RPGMakerWeb.com ). Holy crap that narrator in their advertisement video is legendary. Funny you have to pay for it now though...
Haha, I messed with XP and 2003 a lot back in the day. Also had some fun with the PSX version with a friend, I'll never forget when I accidentally saved over his file though ... ouch.

Re: Anybody made a game using RPG Maker VX?
VX is good, but once I switched to XP I never went back. If anything, VX is like a lite version of XP, nicely polished to accommodate users who are completely new to the franchise. VX is a good place to start, but if you're planning on really devoting some time an' effort into this you'll want to hit up RMXP sooner than later.
The options and versatility that XP offers far outweigh what VX has; hence, it's a better investment.

Re: Anybody made a game using RPG Maker VX?
I looked at XP and from everything I've read the mapping system is incredibly difficult (which isn't the case in VX). I'll probably download the trial to give it a shot though. Although if I can figure out how to do a few things in VX (like change the battle background for example) then it will probably do everything I need it to.
I do like the fact that XP is half the price as VX. I'll also have to see if there is a good community for XP like there is for VX.

The community for XP is much larger than the one for VX, and it's much easier to get/find help for XP simply because it's been out longer.
As far as mapping goes, it's a tad more difficult but you're not limited in XP like you are in VX. In VX, the mapping is grid based an' your characters cannot exceed 2x1 grids; so you're SOL if you want to create a convincing hulking companion.
Here's an example of some of the stuff I've been doing:

In XP I have freedom with the scaling of the characters. That minotaur wouldn't work as a character in VX; you'd have to treat him as an object.
VX is a good start for beginners though. Hell, I started learning with VX an' hated XP at first, lol. But the moment I ran out of tilesets in VX I started realizing just how limited that software was.

Re: Anybody made a game using RPG Maker VX?
That looks really cool. I think I'm going to start out with VX for a couple of shorter games before moving up to XP. I found a forum that talks about the differences and a lot of the hardcore people were all about XP because of the freedom. They also said that a lot is the same in both versions (like the Switches for example).
Question though, is there a dungeon generator in XP? That's the part about VX that really made me go "wow". I really want to focus on the story aspect, so not having to spend 20 hours designing and building a sprawling multi-level dungeon piece by piece is incredibly nice and gives me more time to deal with the story (since I kind of have limited time to work on it).
