Retro gaming with a HD CRT
Retro gaming with a HD CRT
I know this has been asked a few times, but I would really like ya'lls opinion on this. I was browsing the local craigslist for some furniture for my apartment when I came across this ad http://collegestation.craigslist.org/fu ... 48682.html. The TV, he claims, is HD but when I researched the Trinitron line it seemed to me that that particular style (the speakers on the bottom) were standard def. I've seen an N64 on a HD LCD before and I wanted to vomit it looked so horrible so my question is this: does a HD CRT do a better job of displaying retro games than a LCD? Also can anyone confirm from that crappy picture if that style of Trinitron is SD only?

I had a Trinitron similar to that one and it was only SD (CRT), but perfect for retro gaming. It put out a great picture but heaven help you if you have to take that thing up or down any stairs....it could double as an anchor
30 bucks for the tv and stand sounds like a good deal for your older gen consoles imo.

...and this is why I opted for a downstairs apartment!

Get the model number. From the placement of the speakers looks like its not a HD tube. But at thirty bucks a very good price even if it is only 480i.BananaXX wrote:Sorry I forgot to mention I emailed him asking if it was HD and he said it was. But for some reason I dont believe it.
I own a HD CRT 4:3 WEGA and love it, goes from 480i all the way to 720p and 1080i. The perfect screen for retro gaming supporting RF all the way to HDMI with the DVI input. Everything from Atari to the Wii all look great. The one downfall of HD is losing lightgun support which now is handled by the Wii.
The WEGA series do have a weakness of chips failing on the power supply D board. Not very often but usually the first thing to give out. A tricky repair but very inexpensive.

I'd love to get a HD CRT WEGA one of these days. Shame I can't find it anywhere locally.CRTGAMER wrote:Get the model number. From the placement of the speakers looks like its not a HD tube. Keep hitting Thrift stores, you may eventually find one. I was very lucky to get mine new, a rarity considering the limited amount of HD CRTs came out in widescreen. I first bought a regular EDTV WEGA, then saw that the WEGA HD version was on sale for only 100 bucks more. I hauled the 32" EDTV back and picked up the HD CRT. Even though it looked identical other then an added camera card reader, the HD tube is a lot heavier! Luckily my wall unit has a center support in it to handle the 200 pounds.XxBroBuzzxX wrote:I'd love to get a HD CRT WEGA one of these days.
