Re: Operation C for Game Boy
Well yeah, I do still have Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, and I used to have Fall of the Footclan when I was a kid. I guess because those were harder I just didn't notice the length as much. So yeah, I guess it's a Konami thing. Because like I pointed out, other GB games aren't so short.

but remember, it was made in the first year of GB's lifetime. It was an early early game. Developers were still experimenting with how to even make PORTABLE gaming a thing.BurningDoom wrote:Well yeah, I do still have Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, and I used to have Fall of the Footclan when I was a kid. Funny thing is that I actually don't want those massive games on my portables anymore.Rurouni_Fencer wrote: We got spoiled with today's Metroidvania's, portable Zeldas, and Final Fantasy's.

I still think first year isn't much of an excuse. (And Operation C was in 1991, Game Boy released in 1989). Look at games like Super Mario Land, Final Fantasy Adventure, Final Fantasy Legend, Mega Man: Dr. Wiley's Revenge, and Metroid II. All released the same year.noiseredux wrote:but remember, it was made in the first year of GB's lifetime. It was an early early game. Well Wiley's Revenge only had six levels in all, so Capcom wasn't doing much better that year. Metroid II isn't all that big either--it just feels bigger than it is due to the backtracking. Ninja Gaiden Shadow from Tecmo and Natsume that same year was also only five levels. It wasn't just a Konami thing, and it wasn't unusual. It was par for the course for action games on GameBoy at the time.BurningDoom wrote:I still think first year isn't much of an excuse. (And Operation C was in 1991, Game Boy released in 1989). More portable games back then were on the short side then they were on the long. Or they were arcade and puzzle games that you worked for a high score more then worry about winning.
Even games that were longer such as Super Mario Land weren't exactly beefy so they could be completed fairly quickly. One good drive across state to the relatives for Thanksgiving and you're probably done.
I'm still stuck back then I like my portables to be quick fun. If I want to play a big epic I'd rather play on a home console. I've played Game and Watch Gallery and Kirby's Dream Land so many times, they never get old.
I think the first truly long game I ever played on a handheld was Pokemon and even then if you think about it it was made for short spurts of gameplay. I'd switch it on on the way to school have a few battles, save, and come back later that day.

yr right on 1991.BurningDoom wrote: I still think first year isn't much of an excuse. (And Operation C was in 1991, Game Boy released in 1989). But you can't compare a Contra game to an RPG so forget the FF games. Super Mario Land is technically longer, but I can beat that in like 45 mins. Operation C on the other is fucking hard and will take you a while to beat if you don't use extra life codes or level sel-- OOPS!

Off-topic but has this already been a Together Retro? If not, it should be.noiseredux wrote:Super Mario Land is technically longer, but I can beat that in like 45 mins.

Re: Operation C for Game Boy
nope. In the past couple years we've tried to make TR titles games that appear on multiple consoles. That way members have more chance to get in on it.Opa Opa wrote:Off-topic but has this already been a Together Retro? Hey.... I wasn't really epic failed. There ARE only 4 robot master's stages in the first GB Mega Man!flamepanther wrote:Well Wiley's Revenge only had six levels in all, so Capcom wasn't doing much better that year.
