Has anyone every given up collecting?

I am starting to move towards the digital releases as an option, but im worried about my digital copy and not being able to redownload something 5 - 10 years from today. What IF i wanted to play infamous (that i downloaded for the welcome back program) or any other digital release, for my ps3, 5 years after the ps4 comes out? Will i be able to?

Probably not. Which is why you should get the physical version once it's super cheap used as a back-up.

Wow, some of you guys really have 'been there, done that' in terms of collecting.

I too sold off my entire collection but it was nothing in comparison, I guess it wasn't so much the hassle of having them around but that actual process of finding copies I was happy with. I can be a bit of a control freak and practically every second hand game has been 'mis-treated' in my eyes. As a result it just became a tedious process of searching local stores because I couldn't trust eBay. My girlfriend made me realise how ridiculous this was when one day I was determined to iron the inlays from a copy or resident evil code veronica.

Now I physically own very few games and used the money earned from selling my collection to reinvest in PSN titles and Steam. I still get the same satisfaction at looking at my collection whether it be on a shelf or in a list on my PC.

Like many things in my life, collecting increases and decreases with my current interest in the hobby. Right now I am focusing on playing the games I have, particularly current gen games, so I'm not collecting much.

For example, I was really into collecting a few years ago and lost interest, so I stopped for a while. About a year and half ago I got a much better job so I started it up again and added a lot of things to my collection that I had wanted for a while. But again, I'm focusing more on playing these days and probably wont be collecting for a while, unless I find great deals at garage sales/thrift stores.

i browse and read through the nintendoage forums a lot and it seems at least once a week somebody makes a thread in the b/s/t section about how they are selling off their entire collection. it probably isn't once a week, but it does seem pretty regular.

i get the impression a lot of people with steady jobs jump into video game collecting and buy a shit ton of stuff right off the bat. before they know it, they have hundreds of games and they burn themselves out from collecting because they have immersed themselves so much into it.

take the member here who bought every snes game cib in 6 weeks. take the member over at nintendoage who has been chipping away for 10 years (and 3 of those years were just trying to find one single box) to complete their complete cib snes set. who is going to appreciate their collection more? definitely the person who spent the 10 years.

this post isn't really about anything, but was just a thought that popped in my head about collecting and giving up.

never quit, but im more selective. I only buy or collect what i want to play rare or not.

Before i used to buy everything to just have it completed, but it took so much space and not enough time to play them all.

Recently i sold off about 80% of my genesis collection and just kept a few games that i liked.

I started to collect Sega Master System games that had a Brazil-only release. I thought it would be an interesting collection and not very common. I got a few and then realized it was a stupid (expensive) idea so I stopped. Maybe if I ever travel to Brazil I could hunt down the games for a decent price to complete the collection. Trying to find deals through ebay is not working out. There was one seller a while back who just ran auctions for the games instead of posting Buy-It-Nows with ridiculous prices, but not anymore.

I tend to collect stuff when I feel like it, and stop when I'm not really interested in anything.

My most recent interest has been the Panzer Dragoon series - however, that was a few months ago. I don't think I've played anything serious other than a few iOS games since then.

I love games, but it's not really something I do to fill my free time. If there is a game or series I think I would like, I'll find time to purchase it and play it because I'm motivated to do so. If I have spare time to kill there are other things I'd prefer to do (not to bash free-time gaming people or anything). So my collection habits kind of mirror this I think.

I always wonder why people collect games and never play them at all. I know some want to buy the games now so they don't have to worry of trying to find the game later on. But still, why is the point of buying tons of games but only play certain percentage of it. Kinda sad for me and also a waste of money from my point of view.

I think part of it is the challenge of completing a collection. Some people collect things like stamps which have no practical purpose in mass quantities. Games are like stamps, they just have more of a function to most people.

Collecting just isn't an option anymore with my financial limitations as a student; and then there's the practical side of just using roms... But my gamer heart still yearns for eBay and retro game stores.
That videogame mancave with printed posters of classic games plastered on the walls will one day be reality.
