Help me figure out what the hell is wrong with my computer

Alright main problem is that when I try and put the majority of things in fullscreen the comp decides it's not in the mood and it'll flash how it should be then just go back to windowed. I figured it was probably something to do with haveing shitty onboard graphics but I now have a nvidia 7300 and am still getting the same problems. The only thing I've been able to get running fullscreen is touhou and stepmania, Windows media player visualations won't go full screen for christ's sake.

how is your ram? are u shutting down explorer.exe? are you still running antivirus while you play?

It sounds like your monitor isn't up to displaying the resolution those full screen programs are displaying. What sort of monitor do you have, and what is it's native resolution?

What brand of desktop is it? That should tell you the problem right there.

I would suggest different drivers, they seem to be the most finicky thing to me. I use modified drivers called omega drivers and they seem to work very well for most applications. If you've already tried several sets of drivers then I have no clue...

Does your nvidia card require additional power from your power supply? Or does it get everything just from the slot? If it needs extra power make sure your power supply meets the requirements.

Aside from the things that have been said, it might be a refresh rate issue. Sometimes, even when your monitor DOES support a rate, your machine may think it does not, and automatically fall back to windowed. Improper drivers can cause this conflict, so try newest official drivers first (the omegas often gave me trouble so I cant suggest them. Sometimes they even fail to install.) You can also try small refresh rate utilities like this one.

It's a compaq with 512 megs of ram and the moniters native resolution is 1024 768. The thing is the comp used to work fullscreen but when I got a new harddrive and installed the OS shit started fucking up. The card does require extra power but the onboard graphics gave me the same crap. Also a 7 series is an upgrade if you just had onboard before. Also I'm on service pack 1 if that's any help. I'll try the drivers later.
