Slow burn, but it set up some serious potential for the season while resolving some of the questions from the season 3 finale.
At first I was thinking Gus's employee (don't know his name) was somehow a traitor and had been behind the whole attempt to kill walt so that he could take over the lab. But if that's not it, then why did Gus kill him? Just for cooking? As a message to walt and jesse not to fuck with him? I guess I knew gus was a badass, but the outright murder was surprising.
The change of clothes and hydrofluoric acid comeback were great though. Showing how efficiently walt and jesse can dispose of someone. . .
Jesse's comments in the Denny's were a little vague though. . .

Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
SPOILERS!
My thoughts almost exactly. When Gus cut that dude's throat, I was like, "WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!" I couldn't figure out why. Gus was probably mad in general, and wanted to kill some one, but knew it couldn't be Walt or Jessy. Perhaps he was mad at the dude for cooking, or mad that people saw his face at the murder scene. Either way, it was a powerful message to Walt and Jessy. Gus is fucking crazy.
I liked Jessy's first line in the episode. "I never used this stuff before, are you sure it will work?" ... "Trust us." And yeah, looks like they really set up for the season. The last shot of the episode "Lab Notes" especially.
Now to begin BB withdrawal until next week...

I liked the episode. Gus changing his clothes after killing the guy and dropping the utility knife on the ground was classic.
Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
I just thought that Gus killed the guy because he was seen as a liability for having been seen at the murder scene. At the same time, it sent a powerful message to Walt and Jesse.
To me, this episode was just awesome. The part I liked most was Walt's attempt to think over his and Jesse's next move, only to find Jesse shrugging it off. It's going to be really cool to have this self-confident, stronger Jesse this time around.

It was a good episode, I didn't expect him to cut that guy's throat. It also grossed me out!
Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
Him being a liability went through my mind. But how did gus know that? I guess mike could have told him when he made the call but they never clarified that. Also, he was standing right there when Mike picked up the phone.

Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
Starts out with that special Breaking Bad brand of high tension. Loved it. Super excited for this season, I love seeing Walt take control. The whole sequence with Gus coming in and doing his thang so casually and so unexpectedly was pretty creepy.
Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
Spoilers, and all that...
Here are my thoughts on the matter:
The guy who had his throat cut seemed more anxious/nervous than normal. He was generally very cool and calm, but after Gale's death he was noticeably agitated and more talkative than usual. If I had to guess, he was put in charge of keeping an eye on Gale, keeping him safe. That might explain why he was trying to prove that he could cook. If his failure to keep Gale alive had no impact, then perhaps he was free of consequence.
And yes, I do believe that his being seen made him a liability, a loose end. I guarantee Mike told Gus on the phone. You don't keep out details like that when you are talking to Gus, or else a box cutter is the least of your worries.
I also don't think this makes Gus "crazy" or "insane". He shows that he can handle his own "dirty" work as well as making a point that when you can't do your job, he doesn't need you anymore.
As far as Jesse's comments at the diner, I think he is pretty much saying that they might be alive, but they are now Gus's prisoners (more than ever).
Anyhow, great show, can't wait for more episodes.

Re: Breaking Bad Season 3 Starts Tonight
Just finished watching the episode, great return and cant wait for the rest of the season.
I felt he cut the dudes throat as a kind of "I didn't give you permission to cook" paired up with "Don't fuck with me, I will kill him, imagine what I would do to you".

Awesome.
Totally didn't see the box cutter to the neck despite the episode title. (Even Mike looked shocked)
And I was surprised they covered as much ground as they did considering BB has a habit of not showing as much as you'd like in a season premiere.
