Not sure what to do...

Post by raztat »

This might be a long post.

I have a lot of the older systems with some very good games but I dont ever play them. I like to collect them but its becoming a habit that I dont want, I spend to much on my snes, saturn, ect.. and money is becoming tight, to the point Im going to have to stop spending really soon.

Is a modded xbox worth having just to play the older games, nes, snes, and genesis?

Im also wanting a wii, and maybe a ps3 if its BC is good.

Im thinking of selling or trading every game item I have except my black dreamcast, xbox 360, and N64. But im not sure how far that will net me into getting a modded xbox 1, wii, and a ps3.

For my snes I have around 30 games, some complete, 1 system, 2 controllers.
For my Nes I have 9 games, 1 system, 3 or 4 reg controllers, and a zapper or 2.
For my model 1 Genesis I have around 30 games some complete, lots of controllers, game holder, 32x system with a few games but no ac adapter.
For my saturn I have 10 games 1 sealed, 2 systems 1 broke, and a few controllers.
1 ps1 small system.
GBA sp, with an eLink cart, and a few games.
1 ps2 slim system.

I will list the games in another post at a later time if i decided to sell em off.

What would you do?

i actually did exactly what you're contemplating doing a few years ago and i couldn't be happier. less junk, less worries, less hassle, still the same great experiences playing the same games. if you're a purist and absolutely have to play it on the original hardware then obviously don't get rid of your consoles (but you're probably not worried about that since you're asking this question in the first place).

what i did was i picked out the items that were really important to me, like my complete copies of gunstar heroes, toejam & earl, zelda, etc (like games that i had memories with or that i wanted as "shelf pieces") and sold the rest. systems and all. currently i have my saturn and dreamcast which i primarily play backups on, a 3DO i got from a trade for kicks (which i will probably sell soon), and my psp which i LOVE for emulation. i have had so many consoles/handhelds in my life and it just became a hassle to try and find all that storage space for the games, controllers, systems, etc.

plus i had a baby so i needed to thin out my collection of breakable things, haha

personally i would vote with consolidating your collection to what you really treasure, then emulate the rest and get whichever new system you really want. good luck and keep us posted on what you choose to do!

if you want, sell it all but the good saturn and the ps2 stuff, emulation sucks for those.

Im going to keep all my ps1 and ps2 games, thats why i want a ps3 so it can play those. I dont really ever seeing my self playing the saturn, I play street fighter on it every now and then and thats it. I just got the games I have cause it was such a great deal. New Nights for 40 with controller, I couldnt pass that up, then 4 other games for 65, couldnt pass that up. The only game I really want to play is shining force 3, but first i got to beat 1 and 2. Ill post the games up tomorrow for each system and we can figure out what I can get out of each thing.

I here ya, I'm short on space and about to get married, but at least I won't have to worry about kids braking stuff for a while. My fiance has finally accepted all my old systems.

In fact, my retro duo just came in the mail today. I am going to replace my NES and SNES with it for space reasons, and store the prisine condition SNES for collecting. I had a great condition NES that I sold to purhase the retro duo and made a little money. I figure I'll find another NES this garage sale season for cheap anyways.

I've already sold of my original dreamcast I purchased at launch, and genny and NES on ebay a while back. That was a mistake. Two years later I repurchased them and what is now starting to be a decent NES collection (in fact I too often spend $3 on NES games at Goodwill). We've found nice wicker storage shelves for tthe NES stuff. For me, I'll put it away in storage for a while cause I know I'll always get it back out later.

For now, though, this Retro Duo is so small and nice that I'm starting to like the idea of having 1 for each TV! Now if they could just add in a genny to it too...

PS - I don't worry about the fact that I don't play them ALL all the time, its just not possible. I'll play the 360 for a while, then go on a DC or Saturn stint, and now I"ll be on the RD. There is nothing wrong with that, they're there for when I want a change.

I have a 360, Modded Xbox, Modded Wii, DC, modded saturn, playstation, genny, snes, n64, and now a retro duo. I love collecting, but can only play one at a time!

To tell you the truth, I tend to emulate most of the time despite owning a lot of the older systems and games. I can't have all my systems hooked up at once, and it becomes a pain to have to get a system out every time just to dabble a bit in a retro title. My retro stuff has become more for collection purposes instead of accessibility. A modded Xbox might be the way to go. I personally just have my laptop hooked up to the television at all times and do it that way. As soon as I get an HDTV, I plan to build a Mini-ITX machine with a massive HDD and load it up. I mostly only pull out my retro systems when people come over. It's more fun to play that way with people, and makes for good conversation about the good 'ol days of gaming.

If you're going to hold onto some stuff, I'd go with the 360 since there is many cool titles coming out and a PS2 because of all the retro compilations you can get for it. These are the two systems I keep hooked up all the time and stuff like the Sega Genesis Collection is a blessing. I get the urge to play Sonic 2 once a month and I just go that route.

The urge to sell and condense can be inviting, but do think it over carefully before you do it. I sold a lot of stuff about fives years back (including my mint boxed Chrono Trigger) and regretted it. Granted I needed money for college books, so I guess I had to make a tough choice. Anyway, over the last couple years I've been collecting those things back, but I've streamlined it a bit and have only bought the essentials. It makes the collections take up less room. Wish I applied this method to my 360 games though, as I already have more titles on it than any other console I own.

I couldn't bring myself to sell, especially not my Sega stuff. I don't play my games as much because I'm at college, but at home my genesis has been hooked up probably for about the last 3 years, and the Dreamcast is always nearby. I have just about all the systems from NES to PS2, though my only large game collections are for Genesis and Dreamcast, and now PS2. I have an NES and SNES, but few games for them.

I think you'll regret it if you sell. I guess I'm a purist, but I like to play my genesis games with the original controller and on co-op mode with a friend. I have a PSP that I use for emulation, and I've got rom discs for Dreamcast and soon for PS2, but I like owning the systems, and knowing that if there is a game I really enjoy I can just buy the game and enjoy it on the original hardware. If you sell it all it will be a pain to get it all back.

In addition, say you make $500 selling your stuff, in the long run $500 is nothing. If space is an issue get storage containers. I have 3 containers, one is just for Dreamcast (hardware only, games are on a rack), another is for Genesis & N64 because I play those the most so those are together, and a third that has PSX, PS2, and all my old gameboys.

If you have to sell, sell the games that don't matter much to you, keep the prized ones, and keep the systems.

I think there are two big pros for me in terms of running on actual hardware:

1) original controllers
2) it just works! (no emulation settings, no missing textures, no speed issues, etc).

While the Retro Duo is kinda "emulating hardware," I mainly got it to save space. If I really want it to be 100% I'll get the old stuff out.
