NES hum

Post by vlame »

No matter what wire i use to hook up my NES i always get a fucking HUM. I'm using the official RF caord and my own composite wire connected to the side. maybe it's the power cord? i'm using 1 i found in the garage, not nintendo brand... also it's on both NES's. :( halp?

How loud is it?

I have my nes hooked through rca jacks, and I have don't hear any irritating hum. A little bit of hiss, like on a tape, but nothing bad. I have it routed though a switch box and the audio going to my tv and my old school marantz receiver, and they both sound fine. A little bit of hiss, but i think thats normal.

You're a smart fellow and I'm pretty sure you know this but just in case......
You gotta make sure that you don't plug the right audio jack into you tv or reciever. Then it will try to pull sound from an empty source making your audio only in the left speaker and putting a small hum on your right. If it's happening through rf hook-up too, then heck I don't know. An ac adapter itself can sometimes be the source of the hiss, but they don't usually hum.

it is louder with the composite, so i guess your correct about that.

my connection goes like this:

nes rf or composite line-vcr-kenwood reciever-speakers or tv

You may be picking up extra noise by passing it through so many sources. Try hooking it up direct to your tv with the composites and then you will know for sure if it's humming a distasteful tune. Hopefully your wires are less of a mess than mine, and you can get to it fairly easy! :D

A lot of older consoles do this sort of thing. I always just assumed it was due to the primitive nature in which they handled audio. Although, even my GBASP has hum/hiss sorta noise on full volume with headphones. I've recorded some music off of it and I had to use Audacity's noise filtering to remove it. It was pretty bad on Saturn as well.

if your receiver is not the source of the hum, then supposedly a ground loop eliminator would get rid of that problem

i might need that. it happens directly to the tv too, a sony trinitron.
In video, ground loops can be seen as hum bars (bands of slightly different brightness) scrolling vertically up the screen.
:( this happens to me TOO!
