Do you pronounce 'th' as 'th' or 'd'/'f'?

Do you pronounce 'th' as 'th' or 'd'/'f'?

Post by wakeup »

I was just wondering how common it is for 'th' to be pronounced as 'd' (in "the") or 'f' (in "fifth") among native speakers (since everyone here seems to born in an English speaking country here).

I noticed I've always been mispronouncing 'th' and am quite disappointed by that discovery as my family doesn't have the problem, and has been trying to fix it for a while to some success.

I must admit the sounds are very similar to my ears...

Well, no native speaker will do that really.

Its just an aspect of your accent, and you might never overcome it.

My parents both learned English (came from Italy) and have been speaking it for close to the same number of years, but they both have variations in their accents.

My mother, for instance, pronounces "th" as simply "t". She's just not able to make the right sound.

Of course, we've always made fun of her relentlessly for that, because she can't say "third" without it sounding like "turd".

My dad however, does not have that problem

Just a quirk I suppose.

I've lived in the states most of my life and say it like 'th'. I've noticed a lot of foreigners struggle with it though. I spoke with a native Mandarin Chinese speaker and he kept trying to say it like a 'z' sound or something.

My entire fathers side do that (Italian as well).
