That isn't to say I don't appreciate a good attempt to scare, and I certainly like the uneasy feeling created by well crafted survival horror (e.g. Silent Hill 2, some parts of the FEAR series, etc.), but I am a bit jaded when it comes to finding any entertainment genuinely frightening to the point where I can't enjoy it, have horrible nightmares afterwards, feel sick, etc.
I wonder if nightmares have something to do with my tolerance for horror genres. I have a lot of bad dreams. They are usually end of the world, bloody global apocalypse dreams where it's brother against brother in a violent struggle to stay alive in a world that is no longer worth staying alive for. I'm probably a bit desensitized to this stuff now. I'm sort of like Eric Cartman when he closes his eyes.
I have zombie apocalypse dreams on a regular basis. They don't even phase me. I also regularly have dreams of being hunted or chased by people wanting to kill me. I'm so used to dreams like that that I'm usually taking action rather than being frightened. In a way, it's like the games I play have invaded my dreams one could say. I have what most people would call nightmares, but they're not frightening experiences. It's more a case of the dreams becoming intense struggles between me and my enemies where I'm too obsessed with "winning" to actually be afraid.
It's funny because were I to encounter these situations in real life they'd probably scare the crap out of me and I wouldn't know what the hell to do. My dream self, much like the avatars I use in my video games, is like a cooler version of me that has no fear. I'm more likely to be horrified by something in my waking life than my dreams. In my dreams, I rarely fear anything so the word nightmares doesn't really apply

Same here, for example I wasn't scared by Amnesia at all, if anything the "almost-vagina-faced" repetitive monsters were hilarious.
However I was terrified with Clock Tower, Silent Hill 3, Fatal Frame and Call Of Cthulhu
Been putting off ICO for the longest time. I was really digging it, but got a new job and whatnot, so've returned quite contently to my flurry of arcade fighters and brawlers, that take up less concentration, and, yes I know, emotional investment. A shame, I feel. This game, even though technically antiquated, still impresses me to no end.
My goal is to catch up with all the Team ICO titles before Last Guardian comes out,
which shouldn't be hard as it seems to get pushed back more than Tina Turner.

when it comes to movies, what really scares me is things like war or mob stuff or things like that. I don't know. I just find reaistic violence with guns to be horrifying. But I have no problem watching hour upon hour of over the top horror. I guess that's how I feel about games. RE4 and things like it are just fun. But something like what? Call of Duty? I think that would really put me on edge.
at any rate Flake, I'm glad you at least gave RE4 a shot. You knew it wasn't yr kind of genre, but you at least tried to give yrself a dose of it to see what was so brilliant about it. Out of curiosity, in the little time you played, did you have any impressions about it vs the little time you played any of the other RE's?

Uh, Flake...have you played any of the others in the series?
I have tried nearly every game in the Resident Evil series - and given up on each for the same reason. I was assured that RE4 would be different since it is more action oriented.
Sorry, it's just really weird for me to hear that Resident Evil 4 was scary. Like the other guys in here who play survival horror quite often, for the most part the genre doesn't really phase me much any more. I find I tend to get more creeped out by my anticipation for what the game will be like, as opposed to actually playing them.
Well, I'm glad you gave them all a shot at least. Resident Evil 2 is what got me into the genre, so I have a lot of love for the older games. By the time I got to Resident Evil 4, I was already used to how I had to play. The ammunition thing that irixith talked about was never an issue for me, but that was more because I was comfortable just running away much of the time.
RE 4 wasn't super scary, but it was creepy. Maybe you should try RE 5 Flake, much as I have bashed on it before it might work for you. It's the least frightening entry in the series and you can co-op so you don't have to feel like you're all alone against whatever the game throws at you

I can't stand the mediocre combat and that seems to be all there is to the game. It's just one big third person shooter that only sets itself apart by using the light gimmick. Basically, you can't hurt anyone until you shine a light on them long enough to bring down their defense, then you just shoot and kill like any other shooter. The game has a nifty dodge system, but when five guys are coming at you from different directions, while some dude is throwing axes at you from off screen, and you can't even see anything because of how dark everything and everyone in the game is, and your stupid flashlight keeps running out of batteries because the amount of light it takes to take down a guy's defense is just ridiculous, it really doesn't matter. Someone is going to hit you and that's all there is to it.
Yawn, Remedy thinks it's special just because they made a shooter where I have to shine a light on people before I can hurt them. Well, woopdeedoo. Gimmick game, not worth my time no matter how good the story is. Moving on to 3D Dot Game Heroes

I've given up on Zelda: OOT. Not because I can't beat it but playing with the the N64 controller is to much (I hate it). Unless I get a 3DS and get it for that I won't bother with it.
That the only one I can think of though however, I might look for a better third party controller because I simply can't use the normal N64 controller.

So glad I'm not the only one that loathes the N64 controller.
