Great (And not so great) videogame titles

Post by Erik_Twice »

Titles are important. Not because good titles sell but because if you are going to name your work, why not give it a good name?

So, what titles do you think are good? What about bad titles? I'm not the only one who thought about this for sure :3

I have always liked the Castlevania name. In just one word they suggest the main themes of the game and it doesn't sound awkard. It sounds pretty unique, actually and is far better than the Japanese name.

Any thoughts?

Uncharted. Just explains its self in one word, doesn't muck around. Rolls off your tongue easily enough as well.

Saw something like this in GameInformer a while back and thought it was pretty neat, I have to agree with them about the .hack series, it is a pretty dumb name. Im not even sure how to pronounce it xD Also, I think they could have came up with some more creative titles for certain N64 games, Mario 64 and DK 64 for example.

Bad: Final Fantasy X-2

Why didn't they call it "Final Fantasy X: Part Two" or something.

At least that would've almost sounded okay...

Bad: Nintendo consoles

Super Castlevania IV, Super Punch-Out, Super Tennis, etc.
Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Starcraft 64, Star Fox 64, etc.
Super Mario Advance, Double Dragon Advance, Duke Nukem Advance, etc.
Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64DS, Maplestory DS, Picross DS, etc.
Asphalt 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Street Figher IV 3D Edition, Crush 3D, etc.

I understand it's easy to come up with and tells you the main point, (3D, 64) but developers could have been a little more creative.

I'll grant you that Deus Ex is a pretty cool title, but doesn't anything sound cool in latin?

I always thought the game "Decap Attack" had a weird title. It kinda makes sense because of the horror theme of the game, but it's hard to say. It doesn't really roll of the tongue. Then, I looked up the Japanese title: "Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daibōken". Suddenly, "Decap Attack" doesn't sound so bad.

stella deus for ps2 always stuck with me as a cool name,
Kenseiden for master system was a good one,
