There are file managers other than Windows Explorer?! *head explodes*DinnerX wrote:You guys know you can install other file managers right? If you really hate windows explorer you could look for a replacement. I don't know if there are any other good ones though.

I use Directory Opus -- but it still doesn't help you in all the places where Explorer is forever tied into the system, like the file dialog boxes.DinnerX wrote:You guys know you can install other file managers right? Re: What operating system are you running?
There are lots of other file managers to try. I just have never tried any others on windows. On other OSs I've used several different file managers.BoringSupreez wrote:There are file managers other than Windows Explorer?! *head explodes*DinnerX wrote:You guys know you can install other file managers right? Like irixith said though, some stuff doesn't get changed. Windows is not designed to be modular, so its hard to swap out things like the file manager completely. Explore.exe does many things besides being the file manager and sticks its evil tentacles every where like a lot of windows programs.

Along those lines, a guy I worked with back in the 9X/ME days had family members that wouldn't leave his computer alone if he was gone for a weekend. Since passwords were useless and you could simply hit escape to get around them, he would simply edit his system.ini before leaving so that it would launch Winamp as the shell. That way if someone fired up his machine (that didn't know DOS and how to fix it), they'd just get Winamp in the middle of a black screen so they couldn't mess with anything.DinnerX wrote:You guys know you can install other file managers right? Re: What operating system are you running?
Upgraded my rig to 7 Professional last night. Post to usable in under 15 seconds. Thank you light-running 7 and SSD...I think my favorite part of 7 is how much lighter it runs than vista. Those automatic drivers are pretty nice too.
Though I will agree with those saying the default 7 setup blows. I'll be spending the next few days getting it all configured just right as well as clearing up some of the space on the SSD...

I'm running Vista on my desktop. Needless to say its annoying and I hate it, but it gets the job done.

Re: What operating system are you running?
So, is an SSD really worth the exorbitant prices that they are selling for right now? I am considering getting one for my next laptop, but it essentially means half the space for twice the price.
Re: What operating system are you running?
Depends on what you do. If you just browse the web and type word documents and use instant messaging, not really. It's nice that loading up applications is more snappy, but it's not going to save much time if that's all you do.
