I was wondering what everyone here thinks about the future of PS2 games' prices. I see almost every PS2 that isn't an RPG/strategy/fighting/other rarity for less than $5 now on cragslist. Are they going to be like this for the next decade? What kind of titles would go up in value?
I was wondering what the trend was for PS1 games cause I wasn't a gamer back then and don't know what happened to the game prices. I would think PS2 would correlate to that quite a bit.

Re: PS2 Game Prices Predictions
I think what will happen is that 95% of the PS2's library will never be worth more than $5 ever again once their price inevitably drops that low. But there will be a certain group of games, most likely RPGS's and great games of other genres that didn't sell a whole ton (Psychonauts, MGS3: Subsistence) that will be worth $10 or more. Basically, just like the PS1. And, of course, there will be a few games that surprisingly will sell for a lot of money, even though they sold well, ala FF7. But for now, 99% of the PS2 library is very affordable, so if you're worried about prices going up, now is the time to buy.

Prices will go up on whatever games people want but aren't willing to sell, regardless of how many were produced or sold originally. See for example FF7 and Symphony of the Night on PS1, or Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG, and Yoshi's Story on SNES.

Re: PS2 Game Prices Predictions
Right now PS2 games are dirt cheap because a lot stores are trying to just clear their shelves of them as quickly as they can. As soon as that process is over and those same stores stop carrying PS2 games all-together, then the prices will start to climb again on the good games.

Exactly. I remember when I thought PSX games would always be as cheap as fall leaves. Give it 3 years and you'll see all the decent games go up in price, especially if they are CIB.
In addition, anything wearing the Capcom, Squaresoft, and Konami label will command the usual inflation.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: PS2 Game Prices Predictions
It'll be interesting to see how this develops. For seems reason it feels like nearly all PS2 games were produced in much larger numbers than other games and releases on just about any other console, but I really have no idea or know any specifics. Just weird intuition I guess.
I guess I have spent a little more on some games with a small print run though, Xenosaga 3 and Zone of Enders 2 come to mind.

What about sealed PS 2 games? Will their prices drop? I was just thinking how awesome it would be to have something like this:

For me though, I wouldn't want ALL the games, just the best ones on the system

Any game worth owning will see a digital re-release, which will drive the used games' value down. These digital re-releases will be so full of obnoxious DRM though that a true original hardcopy will be much more preferable, which will drive the used games' prices back up. In the year 2030 people will be so happy to be able to play a game that doesn't monitor your playtime via the spinal brain plugs we will all have on the back of our necks that they will gladly pay $300 for an original PS2 game. This is because the insectoid overlords will administer electrical shocks to people that spend too much time playing games when they should be hard at work in the salt mines that power their ships.

Re: PS2 Game Prices Predictions
You can always expect any solid RPG series to appreciate in value - in the case of PS2, we're talking .hack, Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga, Tales, and Shin Megami Tensei, among others.
The harder ones to call are the sleeper hits. These are usually low print run games that hardly anyone knows about or appreciates, but the gameplay is so unique that the value skyrockets once people get a wind of it. I'd assume that these games would fit that profile: Ring of Red, Robot Alchemic Drive, Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose. Note that Haunting Ground and Rule of Rose are already sorta pricey, but I'll bet their prices are going to keep rising in the near future.

Do you guys think Final Fantasy 8 or 9 will inflated in value once places like amazon run out and become kinda like FF7, but less crazy?
Another thing: Why are Syphon Filters all dirt cheap?
