It really is. If I recall right you can start off on Magic Online using the free preconstructed decks and playing in the free room. It'll help give you a feel for the basic way the game goes. Once you feel more comfortable with it I'd recommend going to a prerelease. These are events that take place right before a set is released. You get 6 packs of that set to open up and make a deck out of. Since these are new cards everyone is on pretty much equal footing and you'll run in to a lot of cool people.Luke wrote:^Thanks guys.
Sounds like it could be a lot of fun to try out.

Re: Getting back into Magic the Gathering
If anyone here are really wanting to get into Magic Online with a tight budget, I can give you helpful advice.
For example, even if getting one of those theme decks or duel decks they sell pre-packaged is a good idea for a beginner to start playing (I'm not sure it is, depends on what you want to do), economically you can get exactly the same deck as a "pre-constructed" deck for much cheaper buying singles. It is a bit of an hassle for a new player, but I can help you.
I believe that right now, new accounts can even get free gold-bordered cards online that can not be traded and only playable in a specific format - these cards are the ones available in Duels of the Planeswalker's games (the Xbox live Magic game), obviously as a way to convince more players to migrate from there to Magic Online.
Just be warned - although the game is really good, the software client sucks in many ways (one of which is that chatting in-client is an absolute chore). Even if you come with low expectations I believe you will be unpleasantly surprised how software that is in version 3 and has been around for over 9 years now can be so primitive and unpleasant to use.

Do you think a lot of people play online and paper, or is it a one or the other scenario?Ivo wrote:If anyone here are really wanting to get into Magic Online with a tight budget, I can give you helpful advice.

It always seemed to me that if you pick one you have to put all of your resources into that one and thats it.
Re: Getting back into Magic the Gathering
Yeah, people tend to play one or the other. What you might see is someone who mostly plays online and goes to prereleases.Mendoza wrote:Do you think a lot of people play online and paper, or is it a one or the other scenario?Ivo wrote:If anyone here are really wanting to get into Magic Online with a tight budget, I can give you helpful advice.

Re: Getting back into Magic the Gathering
All you Magic fans, do you play other TCGs as well, or just stick to Magic?
I'm impressed by how long this thing has endured even though the height of its popularity is long past, so I'm curious.
These games don't do much for me. The only one I ever got into was Pokemon, in its earliest forms, and that's more because it was Pokemon than anything else (though I really did play it, as opposed to the people who just collected the cards). I still have them around, I think. They're stored somewhere...
I'm not saying Magic or TCGs in general are bad or anything by the way, just making conversation.

I'll give it a go one of these days for sure. Sounds like something that would be awesome to pass the time on flights.

The cost is always the thing that keeps you from dabbling.
As for the games longevity, I think it has to do with how well engineered the game is. A lot of games have come and gone during its tenure, but Magic remains, and shows no signs of going away. I think in the last few years its been their willingness to change how the game does business that have helped them stay alive.
Re: Getting back into Magic the Gathering
I was really in to the Star Wars CCG by Decipher, and my buddies and I dabbled in Animayhem and AvP. Star Wars was the #2 CCG behind Magic the whole time it was around.CFFJR wrote:All you Magic fans, do you play other TCGs as well, or just stick to Magic?
