There's a backlit screen you can buy that goes inside an original model GBA. It just means you have to spend the money to get a whole new screen, instead of just installing a light.

I remember having one in my apartment in my wild single days when low on cash. A cheaper route then an air conditioner, threw the leftover cooler ice in it. A temporary cooling solution, but hey it worked. So what happened, did yours leak all over the floor?

Sure hope you're not talking about that Afterburner kit. That's fake backlight...

I'd like to see that replacement screen too.

I'm not particularly fond of the SP really. Fixing the original GBA's lousy screen would be a pleasure.

Sorry, that's what I meant. Is something wrong with the Afterburner? I know very little about it.

Bummer, and here I was hoping you would have the perfect solution... lol

The Afterburner actually lits the screen up from the front. You don't replace the screen. You simply put a reflective layer -with leds mounted on one side- in your case in front of the actual screen. I have read a few reviews for it, and none seem to be too enthousiastic about it. They talk about arching, which means the light is not spread enough to be evenly distributed, causing arching light effects. On top of that they say the colours are a bit washed. I suspect this is because the layer you put in front of your screen has a matte side. Without the matte side the arching would be even worse...

I have done a few small tests myself this evening with some layers and a few leds with a resistor. One of the things I noticed is that dust between the screen and the layer lights up like Christmas. Getting rid of all the dust is nearly impossible. On top of that the screen was indeed washed when I used a cover with a matte side. I used one of the internal layers from a psp screen to test this. Layers which are normally behind the actual display in the original psp screen. I made a non matte version from a thin cd jewel case too. With the jewel case layer the screen was very bright but I didn't see shit what was going on anymore. With a homemade layer and regular small leds it's nearly impossible to make a good frontlight for the GBA. At least not without investing a shitload of time in it and having like a kazillion heart attacks before getting a somewhat decent result... lol

I guess the Afterburner is as good as it gets as a modding kit, but I doubt it's worth investing your time and money in it...

On a brighter note, I found this: Tadàà !!!

Looks pretty sweet...

Ooh, that looks slick!

Too bad it doesn't work with GB/GBC carts, but still.

Very tempting at that price. I might have to grab one.

I wish you luck working on that.

I'm too chicken to try doing mine by myself.
