PlayStation 1 blank start screen

Post by BRIK »

I recently bought a PlayStation 1 scph-9002 model from a thrift shop which doesn't work. The problem is that when it starts up, all I get is a blank black screen. I know the TV picks it up because it flashes a little when you turn the console on and off. I also know that it isn't the cable as I've tried another identical cable which I know works as I tried it on another PS1 at the same time. It should also be noted that I tried it on several different TV's with the same effect.
I have a receipt in which comes with a 90 day warranty so its no problem to return it, but if there is some sort of easyish fixes that someone knows, that would be great.

Open it and see if there is a mod chip installed.

Does the light come on to indicate its getting power?

from what I've heard here before and other posters here on similar topics, you should check that the cover fully closes and see if the spring and plastic are in their right place.

on a similar vein, open up the playstation and see on the motherboard if the same switch where the lid goes down fully connects with it.

It does get a green power light and I can hear a disk spinning if one is inserted. The PlayStation is also making the necessary sounds you'd expect when it reads a disk.
From what I can tell the lid goes down as far as its suppose to as well. Also the spring and plastic is in the right place as far as I know, I'm willing to post a picture if you want though.

I'm not really willing to open it up though considering I could return it as it has a 90 day warranty.

It's not the lid, even with the lid open it would boot up and go to the memory card / CD player screen.

I'd just return it. It sounds like it'll b easier than fixing the problem, since it's obviously not something super simple like the disc door not shutting properly.

Yeah, I might do that. I think the thrift shop had other PlayStation's so I might just trade it in for another one.
