I actually beat some of these Sam and Max games a few weeks back, but I wasn't sure if I should add them individually or all at once. I decided that I'd add them individually seeing as you can buy them individually. I got all 3 seasons for dirt cheap when Telltale had their 75% off sale a while back.

Episode 1 isn't too hot compared to the later ones, although I guess thats to help introduce the characters. The puzzles aren't that interesting, yet they also aren't as easy as you'd expect for an introductory episode either. It was still very funny though. Overall it was good fun, but things have gotten better.

Episode 2 was a good spoof of the television industry, I loved the ingredients in Bachelors Cooking and the Improv you have to do for Midtown cowboys. Said improv scene took a lot of trial and error though. Overall, this was the hardest of the 4 so far puzzle wise.

Episode 3 was quite amusing, with you infiltrating the mafia. However, it was very easy compared to the others, and also really short too, taking me about and hour and a half, when the others took 3 or so.

Episode 4 is the best so far. I enjoyed the spoofing of American politics even if I'm not from the States, and it made me laugh out loud quite a lot. The puzzles were generally quite clever, if not too tough.

I'm enjoying the series so far for sure. I have 2 more to finish save the world, then I might continue on to Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space.

Panzer Dragoon I beat for the Snickerdoodle summer game challenge, making it my 3rd game beaten for the challenge. I posted some thoughts in that thread.

Wow this game is cruel. I just slogged my way through it, and some of those boss fights kicked my ass. Level six in particular(the boss rush level) was really nasty and was followed up by a really tough boss. I actually had to take a few breaks during those fights because I was so pissed off.

But Viewtiful Joe understands its difficulties and actually provides quite a bit of entertainment, making it worth it to slog through it. The plot is fantastic, the levels varied, and the boss designs are interesting, if cheap. The art direction is wonderful too, and there's quite a bit to unlock through the game, though I doubt I have the skill to get everything. While the controls take some getting used to(and admittedly gave me lots of trouble even in the final level), Joe actually has quite a few moves which are a lot of fun to pull off.

My biggest annoyance with the game is the camera. There were multiple times where I'd get smacked by someone rushing in from offscreen at a faster rate than I could react, simply because I couldn't see them coming. I understand that it's part of the old school appeal of the game, but man was it frustrating. There was a whole lot of thinking through levels too, as puzzles generally weren't explained. A couple of them took me a while to figure out, like the first section of the 7th level.

But once I got through it all, I sat down for one final boss battle(which came down to the last hit in a truly epic ending of a fun fight) and watched an ending that made me feel it was worth it...and a weird music video. Interesting, but strange.

Congrats! Yeah, VJ isn't a favorite of mine due to its difficulty but I DID enjoy the time that I spent with it enough to stay with it til the end like you did. I never played VJ 2. Is that something you plan on doing?

I wouldn't mind giving it a shot, but I don't have a copy of Viewtiful Joe 2, so for now I guess it's a moot point. But given the chance, I'd definitely try it.

snatcher - sega cd

"the greatest game on the sega cd." whenever the sega cd is mentioned, this statement is always thrown around. usually by multiple people, too.

i first got my hands wet with snatcher a few years ago. my parents bought me it for christmas. at the time, i wasn't 'collecting' and i wanted it because i wanted to play and experience a great game. and right there was my inital problem: calling it a game. even though snatcher is termed a video game, is played on a video game system, and uses a video game controller, it is not game. it is a linear, text driven story. a very expensive story. after receiving it in the mail and giving it a "play," i got very bored with it very quickly. i was not into it. at all. i wanted something to "play" and the game was not delivering. you can bet your ass i was calling snatcher the most overrated piece of shit in the history of gaming.

i felt guilty that my parents dropped 200 dollars (i forget what they paid exactly) and yadda yadda yadda i returned the game to the seller without any hassle.

i recently acquired this 'game'...again. this time around, however, i knew exactly what kind of 'game' i was getting into. i was prepared to read...a lot. because of this, my experience the second time around was much better.

i don't want to make this post a novel's length, so i will try to summarize the good, the bad, and the ugly about the 'game.'
the bad:
-pressing "look" and "investigate" for 9 hours kind of got boring and repetitive at the end. at the beginning it was cool to use these functions to immerse yourself in neo kobe, but at the end i just didn't give a fuck.

the good:
-the puzzles weren't so hard you needed a walkthrough to complete them. even if you got a little stuck, your side kick - metal gear - always gave helpful hints.

-you couldn't continue to a new screen until you "looked" at and "investigated" everything that needed to be looked at or investigated. which is a GREAT. nothing would have been more annoying than having to travel back 10 screens because you forgot to look at a map on the wall. this is completely different than rise of the dragon. fuck, i had to restart that game at least 100 times because i didn't do something at the right time during the game.

-the story is great. you are 'playing' snatcher because of the story. besides final fantasy VII, this is the only video game story that i actually cared about and followed.

so is snatcher the greatest sega cd game? i can definitely see how some people can absolutely love this game and i can see how some people not care for it. i liked it.

is it the most overrated piece of shit in gaming history? i can definitely see how some people can absolutely love this game and i can see how some people not care for it. i actually liked it.

to summarize the long post: play this game. but remember: this isn't a game.
if you took a shit, please put it back

Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2)
Silent Hill (PSX)

~New~
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (only SMB) (GBC)
Solar Striker (GB)
Portal (PC)
Ace Combat Distant Thunder (PS2)
Psyvariar (PS2)
Ratchet and Clank 2 (PS2)
Rez (PS2)
The Simpsons Hit & Run (PS2)
Gradius (Saturn)
Life Force (Saturn)

Total: 12

For the first time in years (I believe 10 or so) I played SMB on a genuine copy (not emu), still yet to finish the Lost Levels and the challenges.

Though I'm a sucker for flying games (arcade and more sim-like) for some reason I've missed the Ace Combat series for so long, and now, finally, the first PS2 installment is finished (on normal), ace game, and of perfect lenght for me (not very long, about 10-15 hours, but tons of replayability), can't wait to try Squadron Leader and Belkan War.

Currently I'm pretty close to finishing Shining the Holy Ark.

Next up: Final Fantasy IX. I've also started Mario Galaxy 2, but I'm a long way from finishing that one!

I finally popped in this little gem for the Saturn today - I'd only ever heard bad things about Mobile Suit Gundam for the Sega Saturn. I must have been listening to people who had never even touched the game because this was a bad ass hour of gaming I just enjoyed.

The game is a 2D shooter with some of the most impressive scripted events I have ever seen - the games developers really stretched the limit of what you can do with 2D graphics; Multiple things happen simultaneously on 4 different planes, some of which you can interact with and others you can't. Often times while you're busy waging your own battle you'll see scripted battles waged between sets of NPC's in the back ground, making the combat feel entirely epic.

This game was a fantastic way to waste an afternoon.

I'll put my thoughts on Super Mario Land in the Snickerdoodle challenge thread.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

i played Solar Striker last year. what'd you think of it? did you beat it? there's one boss in the middle (level 4 i think) that was a huge pain, but the rest of it was pretty straightforward. pretty simplistic and more of a curiosity than anything else, but not a complete waste of time.
