Ticked: USPS need to rename or completely get rid of media mail as it seems that VHS tapes and books are about the only thing that qualifies anymore. Nothing that the rest of the world calls 'media' can actually be sent MM. I was sending a bunch of manuals and boxes which I identified as 'pamphlets' trying to be truthful, only to be told they don't count for MM. Apparently magazines don't either. So they make a distinction between different types of printed material meant for reading. That's even dumber than the distinction they make for stuff on any discs. If I were to get magazines set into a hardbound book, they'd be fine with it. So postage just cost me 3 times more on a package I just sent on something I was already sending out cheap and I ended up with about $4 for it. :x

yeah Media Mail is a jerk. I swear, even different postal workers at the same PO seem to have different definitions of what constitutes MM.

I work as a job coach for the disabled. A couple of my clients were working at Salvation Army, volunteering at the food drive to get some experience to put on their resumes. We had done this many times before working with the same people. Today was different, however. The boss at Salvation Army (who also used to work for our company) was in a helluva mood. I found out later why, she was losing her job in a week, but I didn't know this at the time. She lost it and went off on me for something that was frankly nothing more than a miscommunication and was quite silly to begin with:

The delivery guy asked me to empty some of the buckets of food quickly because he needed them to go out on another run. So I'm emptying the bucket on to the table. The Salvation Army boss asks me not to do that because they'll need the room up there later. So I say I'm just putting there temporarily so I can get the bucket empty then I'll put it back where the bucket was. Apparantly she didn't hear hear me say this and started scolding me like I was her kid. Now I'm nearly 30 years old, married, and a veteran. And I give respect to everyone in spades. So I didn't appreciate that one bit. Nonetheless, I'm trying to explain to her the situation but everytime I try she cuts me off and raises her voice more. So after a few times of this, I had enough and cut her off and told her "Watch how you talk to me, I'm not one of your kids, I'm here helping you for free." She then sent me out of her office and called my boss at my office to send another job coach.

That was the part that pissed me off. Now here's the part that made me happy:

I get to my office and I go to my boss's office to face the music. She asks me what happened, I explain the whole situation to her. She then tells me, "Well, I was gonna write you up, but now that I hear the story, this conversation will be the end of it."

It's nice to work for a company that has your back in a situation like this.

Where did this come from? The water has risen above the curb on both sides of the street now 10 minutes after these images were taken.

I got caught up in that tonight.

I couldn't believe how fast it started. 5 minutes from nothing to torrential downpour. I walked into my evening class soaked and tracking water everywhere.

The parking lot was flooded in a heartbeat too. Craziness.

That really does make a world of difference. It's nuts, but it's also true that we all will (well, there are always exceptions) spend more time in our offices than in our home. We'll spend more time with co-workers than with family and friends, and boy oh boy a good boss can make a world of difference.

Not meaning to shake my cane at the youngsters, but while you're in school, remember that work will eventually become your life. You'll see your secretary a lot more than you will see your wife.
