~Double Dragon Arcade Cabinet...Sound but no music?

Post by I Feel Asleep!! »

So I picked up this awesome 1987 arcade cabinet locally and it didn't cost me an arm or a leg. Just got it in today and I am soooo excited! Has some wear from play and age but otherwise looks great and plays fine. Only problem is there is no music. The sounds are just fine, just no music. I looked at the board and I heard something about the -5v having to be checked, but I don't know how to do that properly and I am very afraid of screwing something else up. Any possibly simple correction to this issue? Any direction on what I should try or how I can work with the -5v connectors? Please forgive the big pictures too...

Well, if the music is midi, perhaps some of the chips or jamma pins related to the music are not making a good connection? Or perhaps there's an option to adjust music and sound effect volume separately with an internal knob or in a service menu? I dunno, just guessing.

Follow the wires from the PSU to see if it goes to the board for -5v. If it does and you are getting -5v then it could be a bad cap in the sound section which is why you are only getting one channel.

Thanks for the tips thus far! There is some fraying on some of the wires, so I am trying to trace it. I'mma be honest, I am very unknowledgeable when it comes to arcade boards. Soo afraid to screw something up. I already tried switching some other things I thought could be it and when I turned on the game afterward I started smelling something really smoky and freaked out lol. It works just fine now though now that I have it back the way it was, and no damage was done, but it only makes me more nervous. I am starting to think I might just want to get another DD board....

Testing the cab with another PCB would the the simple check or wiring and PSU. Boards are old and caps dry out. I know on one of my DD PCBs, I've had issues also with sound. It turned out to the a power related (maybe -5v???, it was a while ago). Someone could have altered the original harness to use the cab w/ something else, then a later owner put back in a DD board to restore it.

That Tatio cab model is pretty sweet: rotatable monitor, front facing tray for the boards and three on the face...only prob are the Wilco leaf switches (for me)...as you can tell, I've got one myself :)
