Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Otakon 2011

Post by itsmattxp »

I'm thinking of going to Otakon this year but was wondering if its worth it or if its just a waste of money. Hope any of you convention goes can share some insight.

I think Otakon is great. Will be traveling there from Massachusetts. :D The dealer room is amazing. Great checking out all the cosplay too. And plenty of panels, videos, and a huge gaming room if you're into that. I will say that I find anime conventions more fun if you are cosplaying. But do not be discouraged if you don't have any cosplay.

I'm most interested in the dealer's room and definitely the cosplay. I don't plan on cosplaying if I go but being the only one out of my friends actually interested in anime makes it harder for me to convince them to go. Is there anything that people that don't like anime as much can do at the convention and still have fun? At the same time I'm not trying to make them see anime otakus as the epiphany of geek culture and classify it as social suicide.

There is always the game rooms and just socializing in general. I definitely recommend that they consider checking out some panels and maybe some of the video rooms. They just might find that they actually do like some anime. Honestly, there is something for everyone with anime.

And if you and your friends are over 18, definitely check out 18+ panels. Those are typically some of the only panels I go to because they can just be so over the top without needing to be family friendly. Hentai dubbing and other game shows are awesome. :D
